how do you typically run your races???

whats the racing strategy you normally use? are one of those people who gets out front early and sets the pace, or do you sit back and let everybody else do the work? or are you somebody creative who mixes it up a little?
dr. k is more of the second type personally. i find that i do better starting slowly and picking people off as the race progresses. im not sucking wind as much and i have the psychological benefit of seeing everybody die around me. the trick is not to get TOO far behind, but stay in range. just gradually progress into your rhythm and those overexcited americans will be all yous in the end!

Overexcited americans?? Okay, I'm one for running the whole race my hardest. But tell me, do you win every race you are in kenyan? You make "americans" sound like fools when it comes to running.

in other words, you are foolish! jk man.
in my races, i'm out hard from the gun. yet i try to get my splits as evenly as possible. in xc, my best race went 5:28, 5:44, 5:33 for my mile splits. in the mile, during my time trial i went 70.75, 73.35, 75.3, 73.99. if it was a race i probably could have kicked the last lap in 70, so basically i try to run as evenly as possible while at the same time going out hard from the gun.

In track I'm out fast and in the mile my first 800 is faster than my second. In the 2-mile my first mi is faster than the second. In Cross-Country i'm pretty even. I go out the first 1/4 mile slow and work my way forward from there.

Anyone run negative splits in the mile or 2-mile?

in track i feel it`s hard to hang back and actually catch up. Depending on the size of the field in xc (larger i`ll hang back and move up, smaller i`m go closer to the front)However next year i plan to front run more in xc, i feel i`m a strong enough runner just have to work on the mental aspect.

I don't have great speed so, I try to rely on a big mid race surge. It's hard for me to get out front just because the pace is fast. I hang back early and as the early pace slows, I try to take advantage. My best mile went like this (67, 69, 63, 64).

I usually am not successful with this stragegy in longer races, I try for an even pace, but usually go out too fast.

I like to come up on people, let them try to surge ahead, but I don't go with the surge, I just keep coming back and wear em' down. I like to work my way to the front by trying to hold a constant speed during the whole race. In the 5K and 8K My last mile is usually the fastest. I usually pass about 5 to 10 people in the last 1000m or so. I usually break into a full sprint at the end. We did 1000m meter repeats every 3rd speed work, so I look at the last 1K as just a quick workout, I know it'l be over soon and I know what I can do so I hammer it. If there is a hill, I try to feel my body's rythm, I try to keep it constant going up a hill and I let people go by, I always catch the ones who hammer it up on the way down, although on a tough course with next to no flat, its hard to get a rythm going.

It depends on the race and how i feel... i hardly ever stick to the same race plan... sometimes i'll run even splits, while other times i'll run negative... there've been times that i've surged in the middle of a race, or during a mile i turned the fastest lap on my 3rd... and even sometimes i'll sit and kick...

i've used everything... it all just depends on how i'm feeling and how everything else is going
