Unfortunately, most people set goals incorrectly when it comes to athletics.

Each player should have goals but keep them to him self. They should have nothing to do with stats because stats are beyond his control.
What I saw in the article were methods to achieve goals rather than the goals themselves.
I advise dividing your athletic goals into short range, medium range, and long range goals. Let's use a 12 year old as an example.
Short range goal is to make the league tournament team.
Medium range would be to play high school baseball.
Long range goal would be to play professional baseball.
Now take the same player at age 15 years of age.
Short range is make JV team.
Medium is play college ball.
Long range is play professional ball.
The short and medium range goals change quicker than the long range goal. A player may switch sports and, of course, that changes all three.
By the way, the photo has so many flaws in it that I cannot figure why you would include it.
I don't know about that coach. My son worked on his homerun trot years before he hit one and his 10 minute choreography was pretty impressive for a 10 year old. I particularly liked how he managed to get the league to play the long version of "WE are the Champions" as the visiting crowd sang the chorus when he rounded third. To this day, I still haven't found out where he got the marching band and the elephants.
I think Jon is right on the money here. Focus on goals that you can control. Numbers take care of themselves when you take it one pitch at a time.
