Welcome ThingaBobby! You just don't know what you got yourself into.

Man did this thread take off.thats what I get for going running with the Clark County Running Club.

I went running last night with them and I was beat after, and even more so this morning. So much for working out twice a day for two days. Yesterdays crosstraining in the morning, and 5K last night (  I am dead to the world this morn.

So ehem!  I started at the back of the pack and hardly passed anyone. The fastest runners came in at 14 min oO I really thought I was running a 32 the way I felt and the way those guys were moving passing me. In the end,  ran a 9:05/9:05/8:55 can you believe that??? 28 minutes! wow. BTW- 28 minutes with a 6min handicap- I woulda beat you two at 22 min exactly! Just saying.

PS I am ok with the same thread.

    How’s this?

Doppel Games September Invitational Race for Virtually Everyone

This is a handicapped virtual 5k race.  Runners of all levels are welcome and because of the handicapping have an equal chance at winning, BUT you are almost certain to have to PR in order to win.

    Here’s how it works:

    1.         Enter a local 5k between September 11, 2010 and September 19, 2010.

    2.         Post the name and location of your race and a recent 5k PR by September 10, 2010, in the DoppelLaufers Good Natured Taunting and Race Reports thread.  We do not want to penalize anyone who tore up the track in school, but who does not run at that same level now.  If this is your first 5k, simply take the best one mile split you have run in training and multiply by 3.1.  If you are unsure of your one mile pace, then we can set your PR equal to the average of all runners (effectively a 0:00 handicap) and you can use the results of this race as your PR for the next virtual race, likely to be a Turkey Trot.

Honor system folks, this is just for fun, so no sandbagging!

    3.         We will average the PR’s of the all entrants to establish handicaps and adjust finishing times accordingly in order to determine a winner.

    4.         Post your race results after your race.  Finishing time will be based on your chip time, if available, and will be adjusted based on your handicap.

    5.         All entrants must have a sense of humor and a thick skin.  Good natured trash talking is encouraged.

    6.         In the event of a tie – a virtual Thunderdome is under construction.  Two men enter, one man leaves!

    7.         The winner will receive a virtual trophy, bragging rights and the ire of everyone whose butt they kicked.

As far as handicapping, we can work off the lowest PR, the highest PR, or an average.

    What do you think?

I figure post it in General Running and maybe update it periodically with a list of entrants to bump it up.

yeah!  I get to join in.  My first 5k is 9-11.  However, truthfully my goal is just to finish the cotton pickin thing.  I won't have completed C25K yet.

The guidelines look good.   But what would be the advantages or disadvantages of lowest pr vs highest pr vs average in determining handicap?

And thank you for taking the time to put it together.

I’m not sure there is a difference.  Using an average makes sense to me, but I don’t think I can articulate why.

I don’t have any experience with working with handicaps like this, so I’m kind of just guessing how to do it.

I figured we can use the highest PR and adjust everyone’s time up.

Use the lowest PR and adjust everyone’s time down.

Or use an average and adjust times up or down as appropriate toward the average.

I tried to throw together a quick spreadsheet to calculate everything automatically and quickly found out that Excel doesn't like negative time values, but I think that can be overcome.

    Looks good Bird.

By the way DW, since I (un)officially beat your 22:18 with my 22 minutes(after handicap) I must (un)officially drop you as my hero and become (un)officially my own.

Sorry man. It's ok- let it out. I am sure Bird or Jim will let you cry on thier shoulder if you need to.

So, when do I post my pace rate (which is embarassing.. but heh.. we have to start somewhere).  Should I wait until closer to the race to see if it improves?

Hey Maryalicia (or St. Pauli's Girl?) how is it running with a stroller? I would think it would be much tougher because of the added weight you have to push as well as not having an optimal running form. It seems to eliminate your arm pumps.

I ask because I have a 1yr old and my mother bought me a used running stroller. I tried walking with it and the front wheel is a bit warped and it's the kind where you have to lean on the back to pick up the front wheel in order to turn. It's pretty old and I don't think I'd ever use it. Also the new ones are crazy expensive! I saw some rediculous prices at a bike shop recently.
