1500m/3000m times?

Hey guys, I was just wondering.. This year will be my first doing distance in Track and Field (last year I attempted jumping, bad idea...) Anyways, considering that I've never done this before, and that I didn't see many races last season, what would be a good time for the 1500 and the 3000 in your opinion for a junior runner in high school? I just don't want to go out there and be sprinting at the wrong times, or not sprinting at the right time, etc. (By good time, I mean the time that usually wins, I'm not saying that I will achieve it, but just something to work to) Thanks.

It all depends. As a junior for the 3000, you'll find the good runners in the 10s no problem. For the 1500, I would expect to see alot of times near 4.45. It all depends on your region if they have good runners, or if its like mine with only a few.

well thats sort of a tough call because 'good' is a tem that can be used broadly. i ran 4:33 for the 1500 as a soph last year and im hoping to get down around 4:20 as a junior this year. while that time may be good, it is by no means all state. if you can get it down to the low 4:40s at least, i would think that would be pretty decent.

Exactly, good is all relative.

a 4:20 for 1500 would be considered good in my league. It would probably make top 3 at league finals (if we ran the 15 and not the 16) However, go to another league in my state, and you probably won't even qualify for league finals with 4:20 ability.

What you really need to do is just go out and run. See where you are at and then try and improve from there. I'd hate to tell you that you have to run a 9:45 3k (my senior year time, not that that's too impressive either) to be any good and have you go off and run 12:30 your first time and get discouraged.

1500m, are you referring to a mile? well 4:20 for a mile is REALLY good as far as i am concerned, and im just trying to break 5 by junior year.

since this is your first year don't worry about what your times are for a junior. while most juniors have been running since their frehman year, you are new at distance running so don't worry about it.

I am a 16yr old....and i am not a good runner, i am just a determined one. I train harder than anyone else pretend i am good.

But these are my targets this year....1500: 4.45, and 3000m 10:30.

The times taht would win (out here in Australia) 1500: 4:30, 3000m 9:45

Good luck mate... I am in the same boat as you!

I ran a 3k open with no steeples in 9:55. I didn't run all out though, so I feel kind of bad about the time. I just wonder if I can run the steeple at that speed. That would be a nice steeple time for me. I could go under 16:00 in the 5000 but I always die in the third mile. That's just a lack of experience and a lack of quality training, all of which I"m finally getting a real taste of. When I was a junior in highschool I ran a 3000 in like 10:20 and the 3200 in 11:00.

Well from here in NC we run the 1600/3200. Just to give you an idea of the 'good' times you would have to run a sub 4:35/10:20 for those events just to qualify to regionals. From there, depending on the field you would go to state with it. For me, I just recently got the 10:20 by 4 seconds (woohoo!) and I plan to get as close to 10:00 as possible. For the mile I'm a good 10 seconds off of it but I'm consistently in 4:40's. Around where I live there are about a handful of guys who can contest my times, some running much faster (i.e. 9:45's) but it just depends on what's happening where you are (just like coach B said)

3200 10:16 = 9:37 3000 (thereabouts)
1600 4:47 = 4:29 1500 (thereabouts)

for reference....correct me if the times seem off.

What would a girl have to run to get to regionals and state in the 1500m? Does it vary much from state to state?

Just interested (I'm not from the US)

Well, actually, I'm not sure how the States or elsewhere ranks their highschool atheletes, but here its Midget, Junior, Senior. Sorry about what I said before, but I'm still midget. (I think it translates to sophmore, but correct me if I'm wrong) I have already ran a few 15's over these last few weeks, and I broke 5 once, it was like 4:59 or something (phew) But I think I have a better chance at the 3000, I ran it once and my time was 10:43, but that was a bad day. My coach says I have a good chance at the reigonal finals, which I guess is because my area is mostly CC, and I don't see many of them on the track. Plus with the whole midget age thing, the kids in it are mainly ninth graders (first year) and aren't experienced. Well, I hope to have a good season, cause this will be my last as midget, and next year I'll have to really work to get some of those times you guys have posted. Anyway, thanks.
