Re: Mighty Masters Continuing on from C25k...

Hey there, this is my first post to this thread....I found this link from an email from active. I was reading some previous post and was inspired to join for motivation and support. I am a new runner and struggling with C25k. I am beginning week 5 this week and am having a hard time finishing the runs. I have my first 5k this Saturday which was too ambitious of me to sign up for, but I figured it could be my practice 5k (I also didn't think running would be this hard!). I am already signed up for another one at the end of September that I'm hoping I'll be ready for. I live in Florida, so I understand the issue everyone is having with the heat and humidity.

Re: Mighty Masters Continuing on from C25k...

My first post on these boards. I used to run a lot. I did an annual 5K. I've done 1 half marathon and 1 full marathon. But, that was a couple years ago. I am ready to get back into it. I plan to run another marathon either next May or June. I will turn 60 next year and it seems like the thing to do. :-) So, I will start the c25K today. My problem, other than 6 months of cold & snow, will be the desire to "pick it up". I can easily see myself, halfway through, deciding that I need to go farther, go faster. I am using this to build a base. Once I get done, I may try a 10K program. I know there are a couple good marathon programs, but they can wait until it gets closer. Wish me luck.

Re: Mighty Masters Continuing on from C25k...

Marie - I am so very sorry to hear about the probable stress fracture in your hip.  Please let us know how your scan comes out on Friday.  Follow your doctor's recommendations and wait until you are cleared for activity before you dust off that bike.

Jess - hard to believe that the Disney is just a few days away.  Best wishes to you for a good race.  Looking forward to seeing your race report.

Compguy - good to hear from you again - you sure have been busy.  I looked on-line at the spinner you bought.  Looks really nice.  Beats putting your bike on a trainer over the winter and burning through rear tires.  Even trainer tires don't seem to hold up that well.

Jo Ann - I hope the weather breaks for you and you can get in all the long runs you want before your HM.  Not only does that help physically, but it gives you a huge mental edge, knowing you can do it.  Glad to hear you are staying hydrated, especially on those long runs.

Debwro - you have a busy schedule with some major races coming up.  Sounds like fun.

SteveBikeRun - welcome.  Glad to have you with us.  Evening races are fun, but hard to find.  My guess is you also do some cycling?  There is a 4 miler evening race about an hour from where I live in August.  A running friend and I have been trying to do it together for about 3 years now, but it seems something always comes up.

Nole8403 - Lots of people will be doing a combination run/walk at your 5K this weekend.  You will not be alone.  Have fun and enjoy the event.  It will also help you with your first 5K after you finish the C25K program, because you will have a much better idea what to expect.

Michael_Walter - that is a great goal and a great birthday gift to yourself.  You've obviously been down this road before and you know you need to take the time to build your base.

Nothing new to report for my own running.  Much as I hate to say it, I am still hanging around three 3 mile runs a week.  I was really hopeful after a few good 5 mile runs in June that I was going to build my mileage back up more quickly and get in a 10K, but it's not looking good for that.  I am trying to accept that if I want to keep running for more years, it's going to have to be shorter distances and no more long distances.  Still, I would like to be able to do a half again; I really like that distance.

Marie:  Be very careful with your stress fracture.  I won't give you the "At our age, blah blah blah" speech, because you already know all that.

Jess:  Disney is a day away.  All the best (again).

Torunagn:  I hope you can work your way back to a HM at some point.  It really is a great distance to train for and to complete.  To answer your question, yes, I do some biking, but the past few years have been more running, so maybe I should change my name to "SteveRunBike".  My 5K last evening was cool (60) and windy, which I think kept the same-day registrations down.  Decent time for me and (woo-hoo!) my first AG 1st place.  I do this race every year to celebrate my birthday, which was 9/2.  Next year I will join the Medicare crowd and will change age groups to 65-69 for this race and beyond.  Then my AG will be really small.

Steve, great job on your run last night!

Torun, I think come fall and cooler weather you will be able to build back up the mileage, if you want to. We do to listen to our bodies, and accept what it gives us.

Jess, I'm so excited for you. Good luck and happy running.

Compguy, glad to see you back.

Jo Ann, what can I say, you continue to inspire and motivate me.

Debwro, whew, your schedule makes me tire thinking about it.

Nole, welcome! Run, walk, run and you will complete your 5K, We anxiously await your report.

Michael, welcome. We will look forward to your posts.

I did get confirmation from bone scan Friday that here is a stress fracture in the hip. No running or even fast, hard walking for 6 weeks.Since I have virtually been off already for 5 weeks, just sporadic run/walk, short distance, with a lot of pain, I am frustrated as heck.

I sort of poopooed the Galloway method before but think that once I heal, that may the only way that I will be able to get back to running and stay with it long term.

I have difficulty accepting the fact that I'm 59 years old!  Where did the time go???

All, in all, I still am so thankful that my health is such that I can exercise. Guess I'll have to learn to ride the bike again, and maybe even swim. HA!

Anyone know anything about running in water?? BTW, I rode the stationary bike for 60 min this am.

Hope everyone has a fantastic and safe Labor Day weekend.

Re: Mighty Masters Continuing on from C25k...

Jess-  I hope you don't get too tired out working Friday and Saturday and wear out your feet standing around selling. Though I guess you are used to it.  Anyway, it looks like you will have a cool start for your race tomorrow and the humidity will be tolerable - so enjoy the great conditions for your race.  Best of luck to you - and kick those 13.1 miles in the butt!!

Seems I always do things to sabotage my progress.  For 6 straight days last week - I did nothing and for no good reason.  During the week where I should have been doing a final build up for my triathlon next Saturday, I did nothing, and lost a lot of my tone and fitness.  Luckily, it seems that I can get some of that back, but I won't be in as good of shape as I would have been if I had perservered.

Yesterday, I spend an hour on the spin cycle, followed by 3.75 mi on the TM - a version of a brick, and then did strength training.  Today I went for a medium-to-long run. The morning low was 55, but I didn't get going until the mid-60's. Kind of nice to be able to sleep in and it still be cool.  I went to the park, hoping to do six miles, but when I started it was tough going, my knees felt "squishy" and I wasn't sure I could even run 3 miles straight w/o walking.

But I keep going - because I've got a half marathon in three weeks and I've got to do distance.  After a few miles, my knees loosened up and when I got to the 3 mile turnaround point, I felt good enough to add a two mile loop at that point.  I went ahead and did a full 8 miles (in 2 hours), stopping only to refill my water bottle and remove a pebble from my shoe.  I even had enough in the last few miles to up-pace and do a negative split in the last 4 miles.

The rest of this week will be 3-4 mile runs plus bike & swim crosstraining and rest from mid-Thurs thru Friday. I'm glad this will be the last tri for my season, so that I don't have to emphasize the bike & swim so much and work more on my running.

I hope everyone begins to have wonderful fall weather soon and enjoys some good easy runs ahead.

Hi to all the new posters.

I took a week off of running because my hip was bothering me. The first run I did after that was only 2 miles, and it took me as long as a 3 mile run does. I was really afraid of hurting myself!  Friday's run went well, though. 3 miles in 35 min. I bought some new running shoes yesterday so now I am excited for Monday's run. My second 5K is coming up Sept 10th.

Jess- just want you to know I'm cheering you on this morning ! Can't wait to see your report on the half!

Jo Ann- thanks for your post...your honesty in just saying "for no good reason" sounds like me the last few weeks!! I have been hanging out at the 3 mile runs just marking time...I have spent the time working with my dog on her running "manners" so it's been a bit productive! I am really looking forward to starting the half training program when I get home...just to build my mileage again. I don't have anything coming up till the relay leg of the CIM in December but I'm more than ready to start amping things up again!

Good luck and happy running everyone!

Re: Mighty Masters Continuing on from C25k...

    Hello there again everyone....

Well...I completed my first 5K this last Saturday and I think it went pretty well. It was pretty rough terrain, they had us running through the woods on trails which had me sore today, but it was nice to look at. Also, the weather was pretty nice, it was mid 80's I believe when the race started and moved to around 90. I am excited for cooler fall runs! So I had a goal for myself to complete the 5K in 45 minutes, knowing I was nowhere near prepared. I ended up finishing right at 42 minutes! It felt good to know that I was able to finish with stopping a few times to rest, but also beating my goal. I have my next 5K at the end of this month which is also scheduled to be on trails. I have set a goal of finishing the next one in 40 minutes or sooner, which should be do-able given that I'll have finished C25k that week I believe. It was nice seeing other people there that walked a lot or even the whole race. It was also incredibly motivational to have other people running with you and cheering for you! I haven't had much time to read what everyone else is up to, i'll make time for that this week. I felt incredible supported already this week by being on here, and wanted to update on how this last weekend went, thank y'all!!!

Hope everyone has a great week and runs!!!

Nole, Congrats on finishing your fist 5K. You did great especially considering that you haven't completed c25k yet. Keep it up and the next time you will see great improvement.

JESS, AWESOME!!! I am so proud of your accomplishment. Impressive time and know that you crossed that finish line with a huge smile on your face. Did you hear all o f us Mighty M asters cheering you on?  We were there in spirit!

My daughter ran 9 miles Sunday. I was so proud of her, but jealous as heck. It is hard being good and following doctor's orders when the weather was cool(er) and clear. It was perfect running weather.
