Sub 5.0 40 yd speed is pretty quick.
A good sprinter will be 4.2 - 4.4. It would be hard to be a competitve middle distance runner (800/1500) without sub 5.0 speed. Throwers are usually between 6.0 - 7.0. Distance runners tend to be between 5.0 - 6.0. This is for guys. The ladies are substantially slower.
The 100 yds. is rarely ever run these days. But when it was sub 9.5 was where the better sprinters were. Most good quarter milers were around 10 flat or better, most middle distance guys were under 11.0, and distance guys under 12 were quick enough to have a decent kick.

The local high school record is 1:23.33 for 600 meters and he ran 1:56.61 for 800 meters that same season. That should give you a perspective on high school times.

These are the World records I found. I don't know if they're still correct or not.
The records don't seem that impressive for short distances. Women's record for the 600yd is 1:17.67. The last 600 I ran was 50 seconds slower. Doesn't seem like alot. Is it?
