How fast do you have to run?

How fast do you have to run to do the 5K in 30 mins?  Is that 6 mph?  Is that like a 6 on the treadmill speed?

It is actually slightly faster than that, more like slightly over 6.2 on the treadmill.

But keep in mind that running on a treadmill is a little easier than running outside.  You don't have to actually propel yourself on a treadmill, just keep up with the belt.

Since I heard about it being easier to run on a treadmill, I have increased my incline to 2.  I figure it can't hurt.  I would think that this is enough, but don't really know since I'm still really new to running, just been doing it a week.

Re: How fast do you have to run?

For what it's worth, I used to run on the treadmill and now run outdoors. Running on a treadmill is nothing like running outside. Balance is different and you must actually propel your body weight forward, not just keep up with the belt under your feet. The toughest part about running outdoors, however, is learning pace. The treadmill does this for you, assuring that you don't go too fast at the beginning. Outside, it will be your lungs or your legs that tell you that you have miscalculated the pace

Best of luck with your new sport! Stick with it and you're going to love it.

Interesting for me, I find the road better.  Not really easier, but better.  I hate the tread.  Being on the road motivates me cuz I can set distance goals.  I'm only on week 2 of C25K and I tell myself, I bet I can run all the way to there..  or there... and it makes me feel good to go beyond it on my running intervals.

Get a garmin to time your pace, hit the road and have fun!

I'm hoping to start running outside some soon.  Unfortunately I don't have that option recently.  Last week would have been fine, but we've had lots of rain recently and doesn't look like it will be stopping this week.  Hopefully Saturday I can get to the trail to try that out.

ahhh..   tred mills,   Thats all I ever used to do is run on a tred mill,  until I got very bored..  so I went outside and got my butt kicked..lol   took me awhile to adjust but now...  you cant get me on a tredmill..  outside is the best!  of coarse weather would be a factor..lol   I think you should stay on the tredmill but open the thought of outside..  it really does ocupy the brain better. good luck!!!

Re: How fast do you have to run?

My main reason that I can't do outside regularly is time.  I have to leave for work at about 5, so can't do it before work.  And after work is filled with the kids and other family obligations.  I can squeeze a 30 minute run in on the treadmill fairly easily.  I have to drive to get to a place where I can safely run on the roads, that's a negative of living around all the farms, no shoulders to the roads and no sidewalks.

Re: How fast do you have to run?

I agree that running on a treadmill is nothing like running outside.  I have run on a treadmill once and hated every minute of it.  If you are planning to do a 5k any time soon, your best bet is to switch to road running to get some practice in.  Obviously you need to propel yourself but there is also controlling how fast you are going and getting some hill practice in.

Re: How fast do you have to run?

I do both- treadmill and outside running and I dont think its all that different, except for the hills and possibly getting hit by a car:)

On the treadmill, it would be pretty fast.  A 5k is about 3.3 miles so you'd need to run an 10 minute mile or so.  I think thats fast but my friend who is a marathoner tells me that is average@@

Re: How fast do you have to run?

I ran my first time on a trail today and have to say I like it far more than on the treadmill.  But as far as one being easier to run than the other, I found the trail to be musch easier than running on the treadmill.  I do my best to land mid foot or ball of foot, this makes it really easy going down hill.  On the treadmill, I never have a donwhill section.  And since I put the treadmill on 2% all the time, all my runs on there are uphill.

I will likely do most of my runs on the treadmill, it all comes down to time.  I am not willing to give up time with my family in order to run.  It's all about priorities and my family is the number 1 priority in my life.

@FaithUpHigh, what's a PR?  I see it in your signature block.

Doing the math: A 5K is 5 kilometers, which is 3.1 miles. So to finish a 5K in 30 min, you need to run 9.6 min/mile, That is 6.25 mph. Depending on your treadmill controls, you can set it for either 9.6 min/mi or 6.25 mph.

Also remember that since there is no wind resistance on a treadmill, you need to go a little faster to get the equivalent of an outdoor run. Or raise the incline to about 1%.
