Any 200+lb walkers out there?

I am asking because I am 265lbs and currently doing a walking program for fitness. I would like to see if others who are over the 200lb mark would be willing to have a place to share stories and help keep each other motivated!
I tried to start running back last january. I was a runner in my younger years. Now I'm 48 and seriously overweight. But.. in my mind, I'm still a runner. The problem with that is my body says "NO YOURE NOT" ! I ended up having ankle surgery in May because of it, and now I'm walking to lose the weight and hopefully try again to run next spring when the dr. says it's ok.
Has anyone else out there had to deal with any health issues or problems?
Hey ya! I was actually thinking about starting the C25K running program, but the more I think about it, with my weight, it's not a good thing. I currently weigh about 255 and I'm 5'8". I haven't ever been a runner and haven't really exercised since high school. I'm now 33 and I work crazy hours and have three kids. I have to do something though to work through the stress and lose some of this weight. I was down to 230 before I broke my arm two years ago and my weight has slowly crept back up.

Hey there!
I am 40, in the 200+ lb, I used to jog in an amauteur way when I was young and single.
I used to get a lot of satisfaction out of it, but really walking is what I love most.
I want to go back to walking badly, and try a 5k race, but I have no idea how to train properly.
I hope that you stick to it, and I really look forward to do it too.
See you around!

Chris, I know what you mean about starting the C25K. I was going to do the same thing but my dr has said NO running until next spring. I had a peroneal tendon tear and had to have it surgically fixed. That was May 14th. I still have alot of swelling and some pain, but full movement and strength have come back for the most part.
What I did was search around the internet for a walking program that was fairly easy to follow. They even have some on this site. Then you gradually build up your endurance by increasing your distance slowly. You even have resting days! I was going to do the Half Marathon training one, but the race is only a month away, and I dont dare stress my leg that much in such a short amount of time. My alternate plan will be to walk walk walk over the winter, at the gym, (I'm in Maine.. too much snow for outside) and then do the C25K in the spring once I get the ok.
Have you had any success with getting out to walk ? You must be soooo busy with 3 children! You probably are exhausted at the end of the day!

Hi! If you want to try a good 5K program, try Hal Higdon's at http://oakland.ymcaeastbay.org/views/branches/oakland/docs/HalHigdon-5-KTrainingGuide.pdf
It's a great program and you can do it at your own pace. I recently did a 5K without any training. I had been going to physical therapy for my ankle surgery and was going to walk the 1K Komen Race for the Cure. My husband and all my friends were doing the 5K. At the last minute I changed my mind and decided to go all the way to the 5K.. I finished with no problems and it felt great! You can do it too!!! Keep in touch!

Wow! A marathon!!!! You are ambitious! I saw on your donation page that the marathon is in Florida?? Lucky you! You get to walk year round? Here in Maine we aren't so lucky, so I retreat to the college fitness center's track to do my walking. I would LOVE to do a walking marathon and we have some here in Maine. I was thinking more of running one, but if you can do it, I guess I can too! I will have to do some searching on Hal Higdon's website and see about the training. I have to be a bit careful with how much i do because of my recent ankle surgery. That's the only thing holding me back. Please post your progress along the way so I can see how it is going.. I want to keep track of your progress!

I found a wonderful walking website that has multiple training plans.. for all types of walkers! Now I'm having a hard time to decide which one I should do!

Absolutely. The first walking if any kind I did was in 1997 , I was 45 years old, I weighed about 280 when I decided to join the Leukemia Society Team in Training, I did the Honolulu Marathon, weighing about 260 lbs, and managed to complete it in 8 1/2 hours. The 2nd marathon, was Dublin, 2000, and I weighed about 230 lbs, did it in about 7 1/2 hours. I Dublin again in 2003 at about 215 lbs. I am struggling to get under 200, but am walking the SF NIke 1/2 Marathon in 2 weeks with minimal training. I may be slow, but I can out one foot in front of the other for a long longtime. .
Congrats on your decision to change.
I am!!! I weigh 221, as I have since forever. I walk a lot, and I feel like it isn't doing what it did for me initially. How do you shake it up to keep from hitting that pleateau?? I'm in school all day, M-F and I work almost everyday, except Wednesday (I have bellydancing lessons then XD)

TnT does not lie. It is possible to go from zero walking to 26.2 miles.
I clearly remember being very discouraged in Honolulu. A pack of about 30 young, trim, light on their feet Japanese runners glided by us a the night before the race, My self eteem plummeted, I wished I could break a leg right then and there, so everyone would know I tried, but I wouldn't have to do the marathon. I was so afraid of failing. I tied to figure out how I would do it, because I knew I was slow. What got me through was I broke the race into 4 segments 6 1/2 miles each. (I tried the 1 miles x 26, but 26 was too much to count), I knew I could walk 6 1/2 miles, I trained three - 4 times a week at 6 1/2 miles, so I knew I could do it.So, I did. Slowly, but who said it has to be fast?
What I didn't anticipate with TnT was the time commitment-fundraising time as well as training time. Remember, that was before easy access websites. It was all raised snail-mail.\\Good luck
P.S. If you see a $25 tnt donation from a name you don't recognize, and an address in Ca you don't know, it's from me. I know what you are going though-enjoy the pourney and every blister is a medal of honor.
Hi...I'm at 228 and walk quite a bit. I'm about ready to do a 5K tomorrow, actually. I've done 3 half marathons, but that was several years ago and when I was under 200 lbs. I'm looking for some friends who are in the same boat as I am and enjoy walking. Those of you who are training for a marathon~ WOW!! I think that's amazing! I was always so tired after doing the 13 miles, I can't even imagine doing the marathon. What is te C25K? Just did the Susan G Komen 5K a couple of weeks ago. Since I'm in southern California, I don't have to worry about cold weather too much~ just the opposite. It's supposed to be close to 90 tomorrow. Take care, all... keep plugging away! ![]()
