    There have been a lot of awesome race reports the past few days!  I love reading them.  Whether you accomplished what you wanted, each of you can be so proud that you got out there and did it!  And some of you did it with pain and injuries but you kept on and you fnished!  That's awesome.  Don't ever forget that even thought there may be 5000 at the race, compared to all the people in this nation you are still a part of something that only a small percentage get out and do.


    I'm on week 2 of the c25k program now, building back up after my difficult summer.  My sciatica is still causing me a lot of pain but it's when I sit or lie down.  Walking makes it feel better and running doesn't seem to have any effect.  Sunday I went out on a forest trail and did my first day of week 2.  Tougher terrain and some elevation changes.  But this time as I'm working through it I'm not pushing to finish each week in just 3 days, but focusing on waiting till I feel ready and doing tougher terrain while doing it so that I will be able to handle what races dish out to me.  Last spring when I worked most of my way through the program most of it was on the treadmill or the high school track.  So I'm doing a totally different focus, using the program as my interval training.  After I did the c25k program on the trails I continued on at a fairly good walking pace for the terrain.  I went to just past 3.1 miles (love my Garmin) then turned around and went back.  Altogether it registerd 6.29 miles.  I haven't gone that far since early summer, although in the spring I walked a hm and also a 15 mile event.  I did it in 2 hours and 9 minutes.  For a 10k that would be a terrible time but when I get in a timed event I push myself harder.  And the trails are on a game preserve, and had lots of ruts, roots, and weeds as well as up and down hills.  But it was so great to get out there and do it.  That didn't hurt my hip or sciatica at all.  I just had sore leg muscles on both legs.  The hip problems and pain down my leg all the way to my ankle are triggered by positions rather than movement.


    I just love following all the stories here.  It keeps me motivated and excited.  I hope to walk/run a 5k soon, but finding one in my area is difficult.  But I do know for sure that I will do a 5k at a Turkey Trot in a small town an hour from me on Thanksgiving Day again.  That was what got me started last year was doing the 2 mile walk.  This time I want to be able to run quite bit or all of the 5k.  I may possibly do a 5k in Albuquerque on November 6 if I stay over after a work training I have to be over there for on November 5th.  It's about 4 1/2 hours from where I live.  I saw a couple of charity ones on that date.  There is a Doggy Dash on Sunday the 7th for the Humane Society I would love to do but can't stay over till then.

    There was one more thing I forgot to mention that excited me yesterday.  I've been going to physical therapy the past couple of weeks for my sciatica and seeing a therapist a triathalete I know highly recommended.  I've told her about my 65 lb weight loss over the past year and my work to get fit.  I mentioned that I had walked the 15 mile course of the Bataan Death March Memorial last March, and she told me that her and her 74 year old father have also done that event for the past 2 years.  We talked about what an awesome event it is, and she understands my goals to do those things which really made me feel good.  I know a lot of pt's do understand, but knowing that we both take part in the same event that is quite a distance really made it real that she gets my goals.  I told her about my goals to run and she was supportive.  I described the c25k program and she was really happy and says she loves interval training foIr running.  She used to run but doesn't do events much anymore but does a 5k once in a while.  I was a little hesitant at first to mention my running because I was afraid I'd hear how bad it is for your joints, etc etc especially at age 55, but it was totally different.  Makes a huge difference to me.

    Wow! So many 5K and HM races! How great that everyone is able to accomplish these events after all our training. BTW- if you are looking for shirts w funny sayings try


    Dougal- You did great to maintain your pace so consistently over the whole course. I am envious. I hope your daughter did well and met her expectations.


    Calbiker - 21 days off seems like almost starting over when you restart.  I had a bout like that this winter and it took a while to build back up.  Unfortunately, I've never truly regained my discipline in exercise volume and diet since then, but some of that is just mental because I had been on a regime for 5 months.


    Di209- It sounds like your HM itself was a great event, even though you were disappointed with your finish.  It almost paralleled my (1st) HM, except that you are at a much faster pace than me.  Your target pace was around 8:20, mine 14-15mm.  I also developed problems at mile 10 (calf cramps), but up until then I was able to maintain my pace.  So it was like a nice 10 mile (hilly) run, followed by a 5k occassionally painful-slower run/walk to the finish. With a target of 3:15, I finished in 3:27. For me it was a learning experience & the 1st HM (of 3) before my 1st marathon attempt at the end of April.


    Steve- It sounds like your net race experience was good, especially considering the unexpected shoulder tensions that slowed you down.  In a way that allowed you to "save" yourself so that you had a strong finish. Plus you had a great post-race experience.  Congrats to your "top of the age" 1st place finish - that says alot to me.


    LindaK- You are restarting C25K - but your previous pre-injury base of training is helping you to do it at a whole new level that you never could have accomplished first time around: you are running hills and trails and going much further than the initial time.  So you are not really starting over - you've just taken your training to a new level.  Of course I am already impressed about how far you were going before your setback. I'm glad you have a supportive PT.


    As a generally slow runner, especially on long runs, I am amazed at how much faster one can run and maintain during an actual 5K race.  Except during interval training, I generally run with a HR from 138-155, but during my last 5k it stayed 173-185 and I ran at least 2 mins faster than average.


    After my breast cancer 5K on Sat (38:30, 24/110 in AG, lots of walkers), I "enjoyed" 5 hours of weeding and trimming in my garden.  But Mon I woke up with hamstrings that were stiff and sore.  Undaunted & determined, I set out anyway to do an "easy" 4 mi run.  But yesterday and still this AM, my inner thigh muscles have been very sore - I think they got a workout and overcompensated for the sore hamstrings.  So since I have a long run tomorrow, I'm taking today completely off - I don't think I could bike or swim well if I wanted to.

    Rookierunner:  great to have you in this forum!  The group is awesome and very supportive!


    Dougal:  Cool!!  We seemed to have finished closely in our time for the HM!


    Steve:  Wow!  Great experience in the event: pre and post activities!  From your report, it sounds like it was a happening place!!  Can't believe the yummy pork meal you had!!  And, congrats on taking first place in your age category!  It's great to share this type of experience with others but more so with family!!  "Everyone" who said they will be there to cheer me on BACKED out on me ........... oh well.  But, had a long chat with my 'cyber coach' who really did lift up my spirits as the day wore on in regard to my finish time.  I think I kinda psyched myself out with my dreading to run on a road course versus my beloved trail course in the woods .......... I am totally in my element then.  But I have to get use to running on paved road as my marathon will be in PHX in Jan. 2011.  It's always exhilarating to finish though even tho' from mile 6 to mile 12, "I can't believe I am doing this ....... again," haha!


    My tendons are taking some days off with plenty of RICE; it actually doesn't 'hurt" or "ache" but I am looking forward to a much needed full body massage this week to alleviate some soreness on my hamstrings and quads, yippee!  I probably won't run till Thursday but am doing some weights today and cross-train tomorrow.


    I have another HM on Nov. 7th, the Women's Half & 5K Marathon (to benefit the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer).


    A 10-miler on Nov. 14th (to benefit young girls' health).


    And, another 10-miler on Nov. 25th --- which I usually do every year on 'thanksgiving day' so to 'contribute' to those who are struggling.  I do give thanks everyday so I don't really need holidays as a reminder to be kind and grateful.


    Anyway, I am excited about the upcoming races which will all be held in PHX as we, in northern AZ, are waking up to temps of 20-30 degrees!  Some snow in the mountains, rain predicted daily but we welcome the cool temps!

    So, I just checked the official results on the website for my HM event over the weekend.


    I finished 399th overall out of 1362 HM runners!  There were more HM runners than I previously posted.

    This place me in 111th out of 722 female runners!

    It placed me 14th out of 90 female runners in my age category!

    I did great considering my injury! 

    I always reflect on my races and in the end, I know I am glad I did it despite some minor setbacks.  It is always 'fun' and exciting and isn't that what it should be about?!?

    Congratulations to all of our race runners!  I ditto all the comments.  You guys are awesome.  It makes me want to run a race!


    My legs held up well on my long run on Saturday.  LindaKay I can so relate to your sciatica issues.  Whatever happened with the disc in my back 2 months ago is pushing on that nerve and giving me trouble when I'm running.  I thought at first it was a problem with my IT band, but it went away during my run yesterday.  I think that the sciatic nerve is causing problems with the nerve down the outside of my left thigh, making it weak and pulling on my knee.  I am seeing a PT now, so hopefully it will get better.  It's frustrating to fell like everything is coming together physiologically and have my legs slowing me down!


    It's getting to be the time of year that is testing my resolve. I had to start out in the dark yesterday morning and tonight I was running in the rain.  I don't want to lose all I've put into it, but it's making me question how much I really want to be a runner.  I'm not giving up, but I don't like it either.

    Jasmine1972 - I like your perspective on my restarting the program.  I hadn't really thought it through that way but it is true.  And I learned a lot of lessons and have a whole different perspective on what I want to get out of it this time.  Instead of just pushing to pass to the next week as a goal to really take it and make it something to build a solid foundation is the most important I think.  Thanks for the insight.


    Di2079 - Looking at the pics of the Duke City Marathon and recognizing the area, as well as the race reports and description, makes me want to plan for next year's to try to take part in it.  Thanks for sharing them.

    PJ:  I, for one, am totally impressed and kinda 'jealous' that you get up and run in the darkness of the morning ....... at all!?!#  And, you made yourself run IN THE RAIN!#!?  If that doesn't make you a 'true runner' by now, I don't know what will ............ I can't make myself get up in the early morning if my life depended on it!!  That just floors me! This makes you an amazing person in my book!

    Now, I understand the feeling of being 'down' which invites second thoughts of maintaining discipline and motivation in regard to a training regimen ............ what I do is, cut back a little by doing short training runs and incorporating other forms of exercise, cycling and hiking for example.

    I think it is relates to how we respond to the changes of the season; specifically fall/winter, because we definitely associate spring/summer with running in the great outdoors.  As result, we get to a place that we wonder if we have missed the enjoyable aspects of the simple things in life for the better part of half a year because we become so intent on getting better time and adding more mileage, etc.  The time is requires to train sacrifices the 'quality time' we could be spending with our family, friends, etc. ......... even tho' they tell us they understand yet we still beat up on ourselves regardless.  That's okay ......... take some time off .......... set goals on a race, a 5k is usually a do-able one anytime .......... it keeps you running but not for hours.......... you will find being more refreshed WHEN (NOT IF) you start again ......... training for longer distances.  I really think we should not forget to keep the running and racing fun and enjoyable.  The health benefits, physical and emotional, outweighs the negative and does help one cope with the challenges life throws at you......... especially the needless 'stress' of the holidays.  I think it makes one a better person to come home to and strengthens the bonds we have with others because we feel good about ourselves; believe me, it is infectious. 

    You are incredible .......... I'm still trying to grasp the discipline it takes for anyone to get up before dawn to run ............ WOW!!

    Yes, it was a great experience!  I love ALBQ!  All the years I lived there, I don't know why I never ran in that event?!#?  Must have been the fact that I was traveling and playing in numerous basketball tournaments which I enjoyed more during those years .......... although I did run in a few 5ks and 10ks .......... funny how one can 'space' out some years, LOL!!

    Anyway, I hope to participate in the Duke City marathon again ........... depending on what I am doing at the time next year.  I think it will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16th, 2011.......... so keep it in your thoughts.

    Today I really had a hard time getting myself off the couch to go run. I was so afraid I would be disappointed again and not be able to finish the second three minute run (W3D4 - repeat). But I kicked it


    I am so glad these forums really gave me the incentive to keep going. I gave myself a few extra days rest between D2 and D3 to let my plantar faciitis heal and that seemed to work. I slowed down my pace today for all my runs and when that second 3 minute hit I nailed it. I felt so good I keep running for an extra minute (even if I was a penguin!) I am so excited even next week's 5 minutes doesn't seem so daunting now.


    Signed up for my first 5k on Nov 27 today after I got home!

    hike2run:  Good for you for getting yourself going and beating your goal minutes for the session.  Now that you've actually signed up for a race, you have the incentive to continue your training.  Just don't overdo it.  Stay with the program and you will find those five-minute sessions easier than you thought.  Please continue to let us know your training goes and we will look forward to a full report after your first 5K.
