That silence you hear

Is the sound of all the Alan Webb Critics shutting the **** up. 3:35.83, out front on his own for 2 laps in a wind that was making all the sprinters cry.

That, according to some quick calculations, is about a 3:51.5 for the full mile. Call it 3:52 with the slow down factor for the extra 109 meters.

Great Job Webb!!!! Go get em in Sacto.

I dont mean to sound like a Debbie Downer <--SNL CoachB, Isnt that a little too early to peak? 2-months away from Olympics or is this just a cycle of training, it sounds like his best performance to date.

Re: That silence you hear
Actually it was on NBC.
I was shocked, it was my first time watching Webb (I've read alot about him but never watched him run).
It was amazing to see him fly along, he seemed well under control the whole race, then he went and hurdled a little

I don't know if he peaked or not, but he got the Olympic A standard, the 3rd(?) American to do so I think...

And Gabe Jennings has been training in Kenya for 5 to 6
weeks. Alan has the deeper base.

Re: That silence you hear
I think there is still much more in store. I was at the Penn Relays. He ran a very fast 5K, 13:46, and he made it look easy, like he had a lot more left. He ran the last lap really fast. Then he came back and won the mile. He looked like he had a lot still in the gas tank when he finished that one also. I didn't see the Home Depot race. He's a smart runner and he's got a smart coach. They probably have a program set up so he'll have a dual peak set up for the trials then the Olympics. He said in one interview he was suprised that he was in this shape already, so it sounds like there going to be a lot more where that came from.

Adam, it is too early to peak -- but if that was his peak, then he couldn't have been competitive in the Olympics anyway. All signs so far are that he has better races ahead of him.

Re: That silence you hear
I greatly admire coaches that can produce peaks on demand.
The following is one of them:

Yep, and he has to peak in August, when Mr. Sullivan will be
peaking.

Re: That silence you hear
Wow. That's very impressive. A half-second away from a win, too. Looks like he's back in a groove again. He should be very strong from running the longer races early in the season. If I were hoping to peak for the Olympics, I'd be pretty pleased to be where he is right now.

Re: That silence you hear
I don't think he's peaked yet. You also have to consider that in order to qualify for the Olympics, it's a lot better to get that Olympic A qualifying standard out of the way. You don't want to have to worry about that and finishing in the Top 3. Even if you win, if you don't run that qualifying standard, you're at home watching on tv...
