guess it depends on you but I call it quits by sept where the atlantic gets below 65 (and shore is pretty much done for the year) but whenever you do go you should not swim alone. be safe
goals for 2011:
break 19minutes for 5k
break 2:42 for olympic triathlon probably Anthracite olympic
break 3:16 for marathon ( a long shot but it's fun putting yourself out there)
I live near Lake Couer d Alene in Idaho. The lake is now 58 degrees. Startling and refreshing, but does take me a few hours to warm up afterwards. My first IM will be in June. Water temps are about the same then. I am debating on restarting open water in March, and the Pool for the rest of winter....Or do I really need to stick out another month. Hate to be a wimp.....just want to utilize my training time as efficiently as I can. Hard to keep work, wife and family in balance.
We are wimps down here in texas. we only swim in lakes a few times a year, normally start a few weeks before the actual race. its not essential that you get in open water swims. if you can swim you can swim. If you are brave though and are close to a lake then go for it. I am done for the year in open water swims and will probably get out in them again in about april.

I do alot of "off-season" winter racing in warm climates like Hawaii, Thailand, Jamaica, etc.
Obviously, I can't swim in the frigid waters of Spokane or Coeur D' Alene past September. But you know what? It doesn't matter. As long as you can squeeze in a few open water swim sessions prior to your event, you'll be fine. It's amazing how quickly it all comes back as long as you practice maintaining arm turnover and sighting in the pool.
Hope that Helps.

I did buy a full wetsuit for the cold season. Below 64 degrees water temp, its just chilling and uncomfortable. I havent yet decided to wear it during a race or not. I train in Los Angeles, CA. Santa Monica, Venice, and nearby beaches. You or anyone else is welcomed to join me for open water swims.
just email me. Stick with it! Time keeps ticking, ready or not, race day will come.
According to this guy, you just do it.

This was billed as the "first open water swim of 2011" on my team's training site.
