I got some hip pain!

Hi
I'm having pain in my hip. It started as slight pain not too long ago... I thought it was from using the elliptical to warm up before runs, but that doesn't make much sense. It feels entirely muscular, and no, there's no pain radiating down my leg, or into my knee, or into my back. Maybe into my butt a little... it hurts when I push off on this leg (my right), when I walk, go up stairs, etc. It's not debilitating, but was very uncomfortable on my run last night. Any thoughts? I'm going to try to upload a fabulous mspaint picture I created showing where it is. It's on the outside of my hip, like on top of where the femur hooks up to the pelvis. It's not on the pelvis/hipbone itself. Muscle strain?
So anyway, that was after my run on Monday. On Weds., I warmed up on the treadmill and didn't have any noticeable pain in the hip, so decided to try a run.... started off, and it was sore, then about a third of a mile into it, it felt like something popped - probably just a ligament moving over something, not a tear, and really hurt too much to continue, so I walked back and figured I'd give it a week or so to see if it heals up. It's still a bit sore when I walk around, but not bad. It is convenient to catch a bug when I need to lay off the running anyway. But I have a thanksgiving day race, so I'm hoping this will be okay soon!
I'm so sorry for all that you're going thru.. take it easy and get some rest ![]()

It sounds like hip bursitis, a common problem in distance runners. A little PT will help that, see an ortho.

Thanks for the tips.
After having to abort my run last Weds., I didn't run again until today, Monday. During that time I've been doing some stretching, but not a whole lot. Maybe it was just something that needed to heal up.
Today I stayed inside, and put in 2 miles on the treadmill, with no hip pain or discomfort. It still feels fine... a wee bit sore when I stretch it, but really no discomfort while walking, going up stairs, etc.
Here's another thought.... Several days before it started hurting, I stopped carrying my wallet in my back pocket. My wife has always said that doing this would cause trouble. So I did it... started carrying it in my coat pocket. I suspect... maybe... that my body took a little time to adjusting to not sitting with the wallet bulge in my pocket. Maybe the change caused a strain, which took a little time to heal. ??? It's possible I guess.
As for going to an ortho.... am I the only person who can't afford to just go see an ortho or PT whenever something gets sore? LOL! Yeah, believe me, I would if I could, but it's not always entirely practical. That's why it's good to get some feedback from other folks online. I did go in and see an ortho dude when I had a bum heel a few months ago... so yeah, I know when to say when and see a pro! Thanks though! ![]()
Sorry about hip pain. I was training for first Marathon, about 5 weeks before started having r hip pain. I took four days off before marathon thinking it would be okay. Well, mile 5 pain started - then it would go away then it would come back and be worse. I knew the marathon would not be about time just focused on finishing. Mile 20 felt a pop and the pain was so intense. I finished the marathon but in alot of pain. The Dr at the finish line said it was my it band and some kind of fluid sac probably popped.(couldn't focus to much on what was being said cuz I just finished my first marathon)
Went to ER when I got home had and xray- they said it was bursitis and a muscle sprain. It's been 3 weeks and haven't ran yet, but I have no more hip pain in my r side. Will go to pt this week to see if they think I am ready to run again.
.
Yikes!
I'll be sure to continue the hip stretches!

When I've put too many miles on a pair of shoes, I get hip pain. You may need to get new shoes with better support.
