Spikes are great! I run the 1600 and cross country, and they've really helped me. I don't recommend Adidas Neptune spikes though, because you'll have to replace the laces. I tied mine four times and they've come undone in two races, I ended up running most of the mile in one shoe.

What, you wouldn't buy a pair of shoes because of the laces? Try tucking the loops you've formed from tying the shoes into the part between the tongue and the laces.

I will say that if you want a little extra cushion, spikes aren't much different than flats, atleast on the track, as evidenced by a 3200m state champion last week who wears Asics flats.

I quadruple-knotted them, they still came untied. They are pretty good spikes, which is why I do still wear them, just with the kind of laces that you don't have to tie. They look kind of weird up close, but they work.

What if you just buy a pair of laces and switch them?

definitly buy some spikes. I run the 3200 and 1600 as well and although i am required to run in them by my coach i feel they do help even if its just pre-race ritual or not (i think performance is helped though) I have a pair of "distance spikes" they are specifically made for longer distances and cross country. they have more cushion in the heel and it is also rounded at the heel. If it helps they are made by nike and cost no more than regular middle-cost spikes at running stores. If you buy online or in a catalog though my spikes are a full 1 size up from my flats.
