Training For the Mile

Iv got some questions. Im a distance runner. But at my school they don't offer cross country. Just the track team. And the longest distance for you to run is the mile and the 1/2 mile.

I was wondering what was the best way of training for the mile would be. Would Cross Country work? (For me thats about a 5K-10K).

Or just run a mile as fast as you can a lot of times.

Or better, run up and down hills with a weighted vest. But that would be strength training. Would strength training benefit me any? I know that strength training for upper body can make you faster. But give me your opinion on this.

The distance running will help, the strength training will help, but it sounds like you'll need to start doing a lot more short/fast work. Lots of 200's, 400's, and 800's. A weekly long run and a weekly hill run are probably sufficient.

Some of the elite milers are putting in 100 to 120 miles a week in their
base training.

Others are doing it off of pure speed.

Running uphill with a weighted vest is going to build strength, true, but it is a far cry from running the mile. If you want to run fast on a flat track, thats what you need to practice.

keep up the running base and add in speed work on the track and you'll do great.
