Is Garmin the new God?

Hi:
I'm seeking advice on whether to spring for a Garmin GPS unit or model like it.

My running pals all got one, and even though it turned them into complete techno-geeks and speed freaks, they all got dramatically faster in their marathon times.

I'm thinking of get one myself (sigh) but I really hate how the Garmin looks like a slab against your wrist.

Are there any decent competitor models out there, or is Garmin the iPod of running devices? I've seen one that looks more like a watch, that uses a clip-on foot device. Looks interesting.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

No, this little gizmo isn't the new God. God still stands #1 in my book, but personally I like to run by feel.

Re: Is Garmin the new God?
Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."

What this has to do with a Garmin is really nothing, but I just can't resist quoting Bob Dylan. I love my Garmin, but IT had nothing to do with how much better a runner I've become this past 9 months. The Garmin however did help me keep track of my pace when I needed to add a little extra.

Re: Is Garmin the new God?
An earlier post had details of a new Forerunner due out in the US next year that is much slimmer, looks more like a regular watch, and apparently has better satellite tracking capabilities. This suggests that it might be worth waiting to check out the new model, or at least to take advantage of lower prices for the current models (already available online at about half the store retail price).

Re: Is Garmin the new God?
I run with a fitsense speedometer and fhave done frequent runs with my Garmin buddies. The concept is good. It helps to know pace and GPS is more accurate than the various speedometers BUT in hilly country, cities, clouds, forests, GPS drops out - they stop working. On 20 mile runs with 5 people with Garmins, at best 3 Garmins would record accurate distance. 2 would fail. In contrast, my fitsense would be off by up to 0.3 miles, but it is consistent. With a speedometer, you have to spend serious effort on calibration and you don't get perfect accuracy, but I think it's a better tool.

The Garmin 301 is Awsome!!! It is even better when paired with MotionBased.com!! I think it is the best training tool since "sneeks". I know some people like the polar, but I can't speak to that. I love my 301 and I haven't been on a run without it in almost a year. If you are thinking about getting it. Stop, and just get to the store and buy it. You will love it.
