how will i do next year?

hello, recently(1 month into the wrestling season) i broke my neck, and before anyone asks yes i was paralyed but am not anymore. but anyway i was eventually allowed to run again on april 18, so i had about a month and 2 weeks left of the track season. anyway i was just wondering what you guys think i will be getting in the 800m race next year. my pr was 2:10 from last year and this year i ran, in order, 2:20, 2:24, 2:24, 2:16, 2:13, 2:12, 2:12. now this summer i actually asked my coach to train me over the summer for the 800m and he agreed. also, i never really worked out in the summer until this summer and i dont do cross country. think i can break 2:05?

Re: how will i do next year?
Congrats on returning from a broken neck!

And with missing part of the season and still pulling down some decent times I think you will reach your goal of 2:05 or under next season ...

Your summer training should help you stay in shape and learn some good workouts .... BUT ... if you don't continue run training through the fall and winter, leading into track next spring, the benefits you gain this summer won't really matter ... you will have lost some of your conditioning even if you are physically strong from wrestling and whatever else you do if you do not continue run training focused specifically on endurance/base and leg strength as it applies to running (It's interesting that the 800 meter is now called a dash rather than a run! LOL )

Again, since you got down to 2:12 on a short season this year I really think as long as you remain injury free and in basic fit shape you will do well and meet your goals next year in track ...

I think you can break 2:00 if you do two things. 1) don't break your neck (i mean go out for wrestling) and 2) run cross country. The distance base you develop will be a great stamina reservoir to draw upon when you start really training for that 800m. Next year.

There's no point in training through the summer if you're not going to run in the fall. So run XC - it'll help.

Re: how will i do next year?
ha well i sort of decided to do it...sort of.... anyway i was talking to my coach and he said that soccer would be a better sport to get in shpae for the 800, since doing cross country would really only work on my aerobic'ness and not really improve my speed(which i lack BADLY). anyway the sort of is because of my neck and although it will be fully healed before soccer starts i dont not know if my doctor will let me do it, since i would be hitting balls with my head eventually. oh and my 400 time for this year was like a 58 or something.
but the really neat thing is i lost about 7 pounds since track season ended, which is kinda weird considering i have only gone on like 7 long runs. but i did a workout with my coach the other day and we were doing 300's in about 42.5 pace for 4 times, then a couple of 100's, also we did some hills too. so obviously losing all that weight made me faster too

Re: how will i do next year?
On my xc team we do speedwork too so it wouldn't be that bad... and it always helps to have endurance and an aerobic base. You don't want to lose that.

Second, you are going to have to run in the winter. If your coach won't train you anymore, then join indoor track...just take it easy and use it for the workouts so you don't injure yourself. But keep up the speedwork and longer runs too all through the year. If your coach doesn't train you, then do workouts that you ran with him on your own.

Good luck and congratulations on coming back from that. I can't even run those times in the 800 without a crazy injury!!!

If your primary goal is to improve your 800 time, I would do soccer, because I think it combines speed and endurance. You might also consider doing a long run atleast once a week, of about 7 miles at a comfortable pace. Good Luck.

DO xc. It is a misconception that xc will ruin speed. It does nothing but help speed. By increasing your aerobic capacity, you increase the ability to run at a faster pace longer before you go start building lactic acid, hence you are "faster".

Avoid soccer, you can hurt yourself easily, blow out a knee and you may never be able to run again.

Re: how will i do next year?
basic week:

35-50 miles per week

Monday - 4m morning easy/6 miles evening easy

Tuesday - 2m warmup. Workout - 2x4x600m just slower than race pace (i.e. if you wanna run 2:20 run about 2:31 pace, 2:15- 2:24, 2:10- 2:18, 2:05-2:13, 2:00- 2:08 pace). 400m jog recovery between reps, 800m jog recovery between the 2 sets. 2m cooldown.

Wednesday - 6m morning steady

Thursday - 4m morning easy/7m evening easy

Friday - 2m warmup - workout - 3x300m, 3x500m, 3x400m. 300s- at race pace, 500s- 10 seconds off goal pace, 400s -5 seconds off goal pace. Take a 400m jog between reps., 800m jog between sets. Finish with 6, flying 150m's where you start out the first 50m, hold at race pace for 50m, and slow back down. Basically like an extended, faster stride out. 2m cooldown.

Saturday - Long run - Start out at 9m or so and build up to about 12m.

Sunday - Off

Run form drills 3 days a week, weights/core strength 3 days a week. If you wanna be the best you can. You've overcome a lot already, whats 8 months of training? Piece of cake.

The easy mileage days are just as important as the workouts. This is a weekly workout for around February/March area. Just a taster ! haha.
