What to do when you hit your goal the first day of the year

Every year, I set goals for myself in running. This years goals included running more local races (I have only run a local race besides the marathon once in the last 4 years), and finishing top three in my age group. I signed up for a 5K race on the first of January, and somehow ended up finishing third in the race overall, and there was over 500 people in it. Part of it was luck; the previous two years, my same time would have finished 20th and 10th. Anyways, I never even had that goal to finish top three in a race because I never assumed I would never do that. So what goal do I come up with now that I did that. Sure, I was super pumped that I was able to do that, and even better, the people who finished top 2 were ineligible for prizes so I won the first prize! I have other goals for the year, but its kind of like my local races goal has already been hit. My other goals are to qualify for Boston, run 1000 miles this year which means more running during the offseason of marathon training, run a mile under 5:15, run a 5k under 19 minutes, run a 4 miler under 25 minutes, and run a 10k under 41 minutes.

Coming third in a race of over 500 people must be an awesome feeling! I guess you need to think what kind of thing interests you now that you have finished your other goals. For example, I realise that I am never going to be a fast runner so i want to explore new races in different and exciting places. The Great Wall of China Marathon keeps popping to mind whenever I hear people talk about marathons and I think that I would like to do that some day!

How about rewording your original goal to finishing top three in all of your races ? That should be a challenge !

Come on.  Seriously?  Just based on the title, sounds like your goals are a little meek.

Personally, I'm killing myself to reach my goal of a low 17 minute 5K, and have doubts if I'll reach it this year or any year before I'm dead.

    But, yes, you're wonderful!

Easy.  When you hit the goal....check it off the list.  Done. There is no shame in just continuing the same goal.  Try to place in another race.  Then there is always the BQ.  With a time like yours, it should be doable...not easy, but doable.
