I agree, we could all probably use more cross-training.  Now might be your time.   Whether it is a HM or a Full, you don't want to hurry the training and risk injury.  If you are a "Penguin" be prepared to settle for a even slower pace when it comes to longer distances.  I'm having a rough time of it and I am only putting up with 20 deg. days.   So, maybe pick a later HM and hope for an early Spring - I know I do.   Good Luck & Hang in There!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hello all my penguins,

I just finished my last run on Sunday -- less than 1 week till the first half marathon.

Sunday I ran a 10K for my last training run, and my PR for a 10K dopped by six whole minutes... I am actually getting even slower. Funny thing though, I actually do not slow down with the distance, I stay a steady 15:30/mile pace for the whole time. It makes no sense to me!

I also was a bit offended by the mediocrity post, but I do understand the point that the OP was trying to make. However, I think for alot of people especially doing their first race, or a new distance... having the goal just to finish is ok ... and then you can work on getting better later if you want. For example, my goal is to survive the half marathon and cross the finish line without limping, with a smile, and to run it in at the end. I hope this will correlate with a time of <3:30. If it doesnt... oh well, I have something to work towards later!

Willwrite: as much as you have the bug and want to focus a different distance, if you are still in PT you likely have an overuse injury which will only be made worse by stressing yoursel into that distance. I did train for my half marathon in 8 weeks, but I had already done a long run of 5 miles and 6.5 miles in the 2 weeks before starting the program, so I came in at week 5 or 6 I think.

Runningangel: I am SOOO proud of you for keeping up the good work with C25K!

MamaBear: If you do the long runs, you will be fine on race day!

SteveBike: I agree with you on the some of the so-called penguins. I marvel at those people that can turn in sub 14 min miles, but I also welcome them because they also feel slow to themselves and are working to improve or enjoy their current level of fitness just like us!

I am soooo excited for Florida --- 72 hours until I am there!

My goal to finish upright and smiling!

When I return I am going to really focus on getting the diet and weight loss in check.... focus on cross training (going to try a modified version of P90X).... and also add one day per week of sprints in addition to my running!

    Good luck to everyone!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Good morning everyone! I see that you are all doing well with your various trainings and goals!

Emmaleigh47! Good luck with your HM this weekend! I know that this is not the politically correct advice, but here goes.....HAVE FUN!!!! You only have 1 chance at your first Half Marathon! It is an awesome experience and full of energy. I did my first 3 weeks ago and I loved every minute of it! Like you, my goal was to not crawl across the finish line! I told my husband that as long as I could at least walk across, with a smile on my face I would be happy no matter what my time was. I was shooting for a 3:00 hr finish. I came across the finish line running, with a huge smile on my face, arms up in the air and hollering Woooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooo!!!! I came in 12 min under my 3 hr goal! It has been my experience that I always have a better time in events (5K's, HM's 10K's) than I do in training and I contribute that to the environment and adrenaline!

You are going to do much better than you think and I cannot wait to read your race report! I am so excited for you!

    Mimi

Oh, and I agree wholeheartedly with you on the medocrity. You know that is absolutely nothing wrong with being average in this sport! We cannot all be ultra athletes after all! Someone has to hold down the positions of average!

I have a question about podcasts that i am pretty sure that has been asked previously. I want to download onto my ipod any type of podcast that I can simulate to the C25k training plan. Is there a specific one that is specifically for the C25K? Thanks everyone.

Kerry. Robert Ullrey has a C25K podcast that is very good and is what I used when I did C25K. You can download it free from the internet.

Someone on here was discussing mid run energy supplements and mentioned the Jelly Belly Sport beans. If anyone wants to try them, let me know. I have ALOT of them and I need to get rid of some of them.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

EmmaLeigh - I'm so excited that you are on your way to your first HM, in FLorida no less.  Relax, have a good time and do as well as you hope.  I can SO relate to the "finish the race without limping, and with a smile".  I tried to do that on my last HM, with a sprint and a smile in the last 10 yds, but the finish photo shows a grimace on my face, cause of the stupid calf cramp.  Grrrr.  It seems you've got your training and consistency down, so I know you will have a more pleasant finish than I did.

Mimi:  It is so great that you had such a great time in your HM and for your finish.  I hope I can be just like you!  I look forward to maybe seeing you for the Mercedes HM in B'hm.

I continue to have problems posting my messages (this is the 3rd time for this one so far). Is anyone else having issues?

I'm feeling awesome, I finished w5D3 this morning and I am in shock.  I thought that I would need to loose some weight before being able to run for that long and not have my heart rate go through the roof.   I just took the penguin mentality it's not how fast it's just getting it accomplished.  Sometimes I would think I could walk faster than this but I told myself nope I working toward a goal and this is going to help me get there. i am looking forward to finishing the program before my birthday in March and since I just did a 20minute run this morning I am feeling I am well on my way.

    Re: Calling all Penguins

Jasmine, congratulations on a 10+ mile run!

I am just discovering this site, and am thrilled to see fellow double-digit-mile runners here.  I am a very slow runner but I do love running.  I did 2 half marathons last year (2:54 and 3:02) and I signed up to do a 10 miler in February (in Maine).  I didn't think too much about it before I signed up because I thought "yeah, I can run 10 miles".  But then, the other day, I looked at the results from the last few years and it looks like I very well may finish last.  I didn't consider that only hardcore runners will run 10 miles in the winter in New England.  So, I'm desperately trying to improve my speed in the next few weeks.  If I can get to 12 min miles, I probably won't be dead last!

Reading this thread has really helped me to feel better about my pace though.

Speaking of energy gels/beans, etc., has anyone tried the Chocolate #9 energy gel?  It's simply agave nectar and chocolate (my kinda boost!).  Actually, with all the food allergies that I have, it looks great for its simplicity.

I'm planning on trying it when I start to train for longer runs, after the snow melts.

Wondering if anyone has tried it...likes it...hates it, etc.

Jo Ann:  Yes, I have had problems posting too.  I hit the "Post" button and get an error message.  Not always, but often enought that it is a problem.  I don't know how often the administrators sample the posts here, but if enough of us relay our problems, maybe someone will address it.  Also, I am having problems with the "Stop/Receive e-mail" function.  I turn it off (Stop) and it seems to reverse itself so that the posts appear in my inbox.

EmmaLeigh:  All the best to you on your first HM.  Trust your training and you will be fine.  Pretend that we are all running with you.  The rush that you get as you get closer to and finally cross the finish line with the crowd noise in your ears is something you won't forget.  Also, display your finisher's medal somewhere in your house where you will see it every day.  I am looking forward to reading your report.

    5 today in 31 degrees.

tomorrow I may have to miss my run but I glad to have run twice this week.  Sometimes our schedules can get in the way of our runs and the gym but we can find time to work out a few minutes at a time to make up for the loss of our scheduled work out.  I like to spend 15 minutes of my lunch doing light yoga or walking the hallways of the mall connected to my office.  I also take the stairs instead of the elevator.  What do you all do to get a quick work out in on long work days?
