Hi everyone, I ran my first 5k this past november ( my time was 32 minutes) and LOVED it!!! The run recently sent me an email telling me if i register again i can knock off $10. The $ is definitely not my main motivation, but it is definitely something to help push me to register. I have googled a few 1/2 marathon training schedules, but i am just curious as to if you guys think it was something that is possible? I work out around 4 days a week, and would love to cross this off my bucket list. I have signed up for a 4.2 mile run in the middle of april and i am pretty confident that i will be able to train to get up to 4.2 miles by april. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
you should easily be able to train for a 1/2 marathon in 10 mths -- just increase your running times and distance slowly - but you have time to do it - find a plan that you like on the web - there are tons at active.com runnersworld.com and others -- GO FOR IT and GOOD LUCK!
10 Months is plenty of time to train for a half!! Last year I trained for my first half marathon, started the first week of January and the race was the first weekend in April. My plan allowed me to slowly increase the mileage and I was completely ready for the race. There are a lot of plans out there ranging from 12 to 18 weeks, I've not seen too many more than that. It would be great if you slowly work your way up, after your 4.2 mile run you should sign up for a 10k (6.2 miles). Once you complete that you will be ready to start a training plan for a half marathon and be all set to run it 3 months later (or sooner!).

You shouldnt have a problem running a half if you stick to those schedules and stay injury free! My one bit of advice would be to use on of the days allocated fro cross training in those schedules as a gym day where you do things like squats, lunges and abdominal work. Not only will this make you a better runner as you will be stonger and better able to hold a propper running form, but you will also have a fighting change of steering clear of injury. I started training for a marathon a few years ago and not doing that kind of strenght work in the gym was my downfall and put me out of action for the best part of half a year.

You can do it if you get a good plan, stick to it and take care of your body. In the last year I went from not being able to run 30 minutes without stopping to running a half-marathon in less than 2 hours (still not fast). While I have been a runner for a long time, I'm also old(er) and big (a Clydesdale).
Halhigdon.com, runnersworld.com and this site (active.com) all have good half-marathon training programs that you should look at.
Remember to LISTEN to your body and take time off from running -- and cross train -- if your legs are hurting.

You can totally do it! I started training in Jan 2010 and ran my first half in mid-September. I wasn't fast, but I finished and then I ran another one in November because I enjoyed the first one so much. I plan to run 3 more this year. Watch out...they are addictive!
