400 pacing(?)

So is there any strategy or pacing involved in the 400 or is it an all out sprint and you just try not to lose it?

My coach told me before the season started that because of my xc background i would probably be a 3200 runner 1600 if I was lucky. So you can only imagine my surprise when the coach puts me in the 400 for our next meet.

I've never run a 400 race before... only the 600 indoor (1:49)... is it similar??

this question has probably been asked before so a link would be great too.....!

Re: 400 pacing(?)
Run the first 200 at a hard pace, but so you are still holding back a little. Then sprint the second 200 all out. The big mistake is to go crazy on the first half, run out of steam, and stumble to the finish or not even make it to the finish.

Re: 400 pacing(?)
The 400 is tough to pace, because, ideally, your first 200 is just below sprint pace, it is really easy to go to slow if you haven't raced the 400 enough times, and then you end up with a dissapointing time.

Definitely don't try to all out sprint it though.

That implies you can sprint all out for 400M. Unless you are Michael Johnson or some superhuman, that's not possible. Lactic acid will hit you (some call it the piano on your back). You do need to hld back from "all out" during the first 200.

Re: 400 pacing(?)
not full out, even Michael Johnson uses the 4 p's.

Push 1st 100.Pace 2nd 100.Position Turn. Pray Finish

Re: 400 pacing(?)
if you go, literally, all out, you would be slowing down well before 100m!

also, i'd imagine your 2nd 200 would be over 10 seconds slower than your first.

Re: 400 pacing(?)
for me its more like first 200 60-70% then last 200 give it your all....my best time is a 54.8 open and a 54.2 4x4 split....it kinda depends on the situation for me too....if im in a faster heat, i may run it a little harder off the start, it all depends

Run as fast as you can for the first 200 and let everything you have left take you the rest of the way
your mind will tire before your body

Re: 400 pacing(?)
My best 400 lad this year ran consistently in the low 48s toward the end of the season. He would run his 100s typically 11.5, 11.3, 12.0, 13.5. His best top end 100 was 11.1 and his best 200 was 22.1. So this gives you an idea how hard he is running throughout the race with respect to his best top end ability. His improvement from the previous year was about 2 seconds. He hopes to improve further in college and hopes to crack the 4x400 his freshman year for a school that placed in the NCAAs the other day. Improvement in the 400 comes with more difficulty the faster you get. The best in the world today is Wariner who runs 43s but he ran 45s in highschool. A long ago Olumpic champ said to run a hard 200 then lick your lips and run another one.

Re: 400 pacing(?)
Ive been waiting to see what people said and this is my opinion. I run the 400 in college and its my favorite event. In high school we used the same system that everyones talking about. Get out, maintain and then pick it up. Thats not the way to do it. You need to get out as hard as you can like running a 300. What you do in a race like the 400 is build latic acid which everyone feels while running this race. It occurs 40-42 seconds into sprinting. Basically what im trying to say is that latic acid is going to get you wether you sprint it all out or sprint, stride, pick up. I get out hard and sprint. Usually by the time latic acid has caught up with me im on the straight away, so it hits me and i dont fight it and i lift my legs and continue with my momentum. These other guys might know what there talking about but we do 350s in practice just to condition ourselves for running the 400.

By the way I ran 47.9 outdoor this year and 48.4 indoor im on the internet.

ShoreMc is right on. Here is an article by Clyde Hart of Baylor, the premier 400 coach in the world.
