    Hi,

I'd love to work out with fellow penguins.  I ran the LaSalle Marathon 26K about four years ago.  If there are any fellow penguins in the Chicago, IL area...let me know if there's a penguin group in my neck of the woods.

So im wondering, what do you all do for Sprint exercises? I just tried some, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. (can hardly wait for my first issue of Runners World, hope it has some good pointers)

The Nike+iPod is a workout tracking program.  I purchased a iPod  sport kit that had a little thing I plug into my iPod and a reciever that attaches to the shoe.  It  tracks everything on  the Nike site.  I have found it to be an awesome training tool.  I also use free  downloaded music from Maotion Traxx and Podrunner on iTunes along with it....it has been really fun!!  I think to "friend" someone you search name or e-mail.

The only thing I don't like is that I cannot add my workouts that aren't trackable - eliptical, bike etc.  I imagine that will be added as many have complained....

I say anything that keeps me moving is worth the $$.  I have been on "hiatus", but I amback at it!

Just finished my first half marathon.  I thought I would be lucky if I finished in 2:30, but - and this is ONLY because I was pacing with a friend who is considerably faster - I finished in 2:08.  Or maybe it's because I carbo loaded like crazy   Anyway, I'm feeling much better about my progress, although I don't know if I'll be able to say that tomorrow when I can't walk.

    Have fun, everybody! =]

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hali C - great time.  Congratulations.

I had a good ten mile jog/walk today.  Got all but about 0.2 miles of the first 8 without walking (misjudged the hill at mile 7 by a bit).  Then had to walk quite a bit of the last two miles.  Even so got it all in about 13 minutes a mile so I was happy with that.  Week nine of 13 week training done.  I skipped the last short run last week.  I'd been achy and not into it all week.  Pretty sure it was because of all the treadmill runs that turned out to be much longer than it says.  Taking the extra day off was the ticket.  I was excited to get out there today.  Today weather was in mid 30's with minimal wind and even had sun too with bare roads.  Took a different route with better views of the mountains and it was glorious.  This summer will want to start doing some speed work but for now am just so happy to be out and say that I jogged 8 miles, even as slow as I am!  Hard to believe I'm saying that after only 9 weeks.

    Keep running and posting!

I ran 18 miles Saturday training for the Southern Indiana Marathon in April. My goal is to be able to run the entire 26.2 mile course without stopping and walking. I made it over 13.1 miles before I stopped and walked. The Southern Indiana Classic will be my 4th full marathon, I also signed up for the Chicago Marathon that will be my 5th marathon and 1st world major.

I am 52 years old and started running in 2007 to lose weight, so far I have lost 60 pounds. I have started a blog dedicated to my journey from an over weight, out of shape couch potato to a marathon runner. My blog includes before and after pictures as well as tips on dieting and running.

    Mom! Great run!

Jasmine! Exactly! We are not used to this type of weather and we do not know how to handle it. I for one do not have the right clothes for this type of weather! I did my last mid long run on Saturday and it was about 28 with a wind chill of 18 with a NNW wind of 12 MPH! I had on so many clothes it was hard to run! I come in not last but probably in the last 5-10% also. Oh well, at least we finish!!!!!

Steve! I am with you! I am not sure that a Marathon is in my future either. Somehow, I just cannot wrap my head around being out there for 5-6 hrs and I am sure it would take me at least that long if not longer!

    MamaBear! Good run!

Hali! 2:08! Great time! But I am not sure that you need to be calling yourself a Penquin with a sub 10mm mile! Great job!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hali, great job on your first half. I'm sure most of us would be thrilled beyond measure to finish a half anywhere close to that time.

MamaB, wow, am I impressed. You started running in December and you are already up to running 10 miles. That is incredible. Sure makes me feel like a wimp.

    Art, keep on keeping on.

Mimi, good for you in braving the bitter cold to keep up your training. Wish I could be in Ala this weekend to cheer you and JoAnn on in your half.

I had a good 4 mile run yesterday. That was a long run for me. Still had to insert a cpl of walk breaks, first one at 2.6.Time 42:34.  Frustrated that my endurace is not coming along as I think it should be, but I'll keep plugging along.

I have a  question for everyone.....how many days per week do you run? I'm running 3 days per week and do some other form of cross training the other 4. Wondering if I would be better off to add a 4th day of running, but want to avoid the possibility of injury.

    Happy Running.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Thanks Marie! I wish that you could be there also! As for your endurance...you had a bad injury and you had alot of off time. I takes time to build up endurance. I have to remind myself that I graduated from C25K just about 13 months ago! We are still very very new "runners". If I need a walk break, I take a walk break. Believe me, there were ALOT of people taking walk breaks at the HM/M that I ran last month! I love running! But, I am also 58 years old and DO NOT want a injury and especially not a serious one. I read an article not long ago that said as we age that it takes much longer to recuperate from a run than for someone even 10 years younger than us and that we are much more susceptible to injury because our tendons, ligaments etc are not as pliable and elastic not to mention our bones are thinner. So....I give myself whatever I think I need at the moment. If that means walk breaks then I take walk breaks! I had rather have a walk break than a bone break!

As for your running schedule... I have been running 4 days a week with 2 days cross training for my HM. I have a long run on Saturday. After my HM this weekend, I will go to a training plan that has me running 5 days a week with a mid/long run on Saturday. My long run will never be over 10 miles though and I think the first long run starts at about 6 miles. If you do add a 4th run to your week, I would make it an easy run since you are just getting back to running. Of course, all of this is just my opinion and you know the saying about those!
