I must be the slowest penguin ever.

Started running in October and have signed up for a 10K in April.  I've been following a plan and am curently up to 3.5 miles on my long run days.  A friend at work wants us to do a Resolution Run 5K this weekend.  Currently (according to my Nike+) I'm only running about a 13:00 mile.  After reading other "newbies" posts and their sub-10 min miles, I'm starting to feel like the slowest penguin on earth.  Help!  Any suggestions on improving my pace?  Or am I too early in training to be worrying about it?

The simple answer is that yes, you are too early in your training to worry about time.

In the big scheme of things in life, your running times are inconsequential. And anyway, 13 minutes per mile is a whole lot faster than sitting on the couch! If you're out there running, you're out there being the best you can be, which is going to be faster than ALL those people not out running. Hold your head high and be proud that you're putting one foot in front of the other. Happy running, fellow penguin!

Come join us here! The most important thing is that you're running. Keep doing that and worry about speed later.

I'm a slow runner and honestly just happy to run.  Speed comes with time...I'm definatly faster than when I started but a whole lot slower than everyone else.  I found that working on endurance was the first step...speed is second.

Yes, it is too soon to be worrying about pace.  You have only been running a couple of months and you are in the process of extending your distance to a 10K.  Trying to increase your speed at the same time is too much, too soon.  There is plenty of time to worry about picking up the pace after you have a solid running base - several months of consistent running where you can comfortably run 30-60 minutes.  Run your first 10K without worrying about time, then after that you will have something to shoot for - you can work on improving your time.  For now, don't worry about it, although you will probably find your speed will increase a little bit without any particular effort as you become stronger.  Running is an ongoing process of incremental improvements and trying to rush your progress will likely leave you injured and/or burned out.  Just enjoy where you're at and be proud of how far you've come so far.

    I do weight training.

    It's helped my endurance considerably.

    Hi,

You are not the slowest penguin on the planet.

I tried to do running but I found that I can walk faster than I can run. (pathetic)

Please be proud of the fact that you are running. I think you are doing great.

Re: I must be the slowest penguin ever.

I am 52 years old and started running in 2007 to lose weight.

I have completed 4 half marathons and I am currently training for my 4th full marathon (The Southern Indiana Classic, a year late!).

In December of 2009 I was training for the Inaugural Southern Indiana Classic Marathon in April of 2010, I was really looking forward to it, a Boston qualifier in my backyard! I have a long term goal of qualifying for Boston. I was concentrating on my speed really pushing myself. I injured my right quadriceps in the process and could not run for over a month, I was going to physical therapy and taking hyrdo-codone. Needless to say, I had to drop out of the race. You have not been running long enough to worry about your speed, finishing the race is victory in itself. Listen to your body know your limits or you will find yourself sitting on sidelines, like I did. I did not run a 1/2 marathon until October of 2010 and did not run another full marathon until December of 2010.

I have started a blog dedicated to my journey from an over weight, out of shape couch potato to a marathon runner, I would appreciate any and all comments to my blog.

Re: I must be the slowest penguin ever.

Slogging, jogging and walking through the Disneyworld Half Marathon in January, I was amazed at the variety of body types and levels of preparedness of the participants. I knew I was near the bottom in my possible levels of preparedness, so I was ready to be smoked by just about everyone.

When I was in that space where I was mulling over what ever possessed me to think this was a good idea (about mile 9, I think), a bright orange shirt caught my eye. This team simply wrote, in essence, "Excruciatingly Slow Finish beats Did Not Finish, which beats Did Not Start."

For me, that sums it all up perfectly.

Well, the other Penguin gear I adore by the One More Mile people was simply Dear God, Please let there be someone behind me to read this."

It's not the speed, it's whether you get out there to begin with. Do the best you can, and keep on going!

    Waddle on!

I would like to get a t-shirt that says on the back "I will pay you not to pass me while I am jogging and you are walking".

What a kick that was to be jogging at the y and have someone pass me while they were walking.

But some day in the not to distant future I will pass her.

Oh my gosh! I had the same thing happen to me at the Y!!! Very humbling to say the least!

I love when the podcasts say "if you get tired don't stop running just slow down your pace".....ummm, if I slowed down anymore I would be walking.

Registered for my first 5K...coming up on 4/10 (hoping to finish in under 40 minutes)!
