My last run was...how was yours?

I haven't seen any thread like this here and hopefully it's in the correct subforum (haven't found a chatter or anything like that here). Anyway, there's a lot of threads with differents programs/training plans here and I just thought it'd be nice to share our last runs regardless of the plan we're following. What do you think?

Here goes mine: I'm currently training for a half marathon in April, following a modified SmartCoach plan (RunnersWorld). I ran 10 km yesterday - 6 km fartlek plus warm up and cool down 2  km each, ended up with the time of 56:46 at 75% HR max. It was -13ºC and half of the course was iced but it was a great run.

How about you?

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hi Lucie

I did my training 10K plus long run today... I call it long because I haven't been running more than 6 generally in one workout, I did 6.75 in approx an hour, so my avg mile was about 8:53. I'm training for the SoCal Ragnar in April and I was hoping to shoot for a split time of maybe 9:30 avg mile, I think it shouldn't be hard lol. My route is a 2.25 flat road loop by my house though, so if I have hills in my legs or trails I'll have to add things like that into my training to prep. My longest leg also might be longer than a 10K, I don't know yet as we haven't met as a team and chosen final routes yet.

Anyway, I am really excited, I didn't realize I'd break 9 min miles this quickly. I love running but I haven't raced in a long time and I generally run for the enjoyment itself, not for speed. I'll keep checking in here, I think a thread like this is great for motivation.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Hi Lucy, I'm currently training for my first Half Marathon, which is in March, and also training for Triathlon season . Actually I may be over training . But Saturday I had one of those runs when everything just works . I had planned a four mile run but ended up doing five . I felt like I could have run forever . I love running in gentle rain . I biked Sun. and Mon . and ran again today . It went well, but my legs felt a little beat up . I'm going to try to take the next two days off . I'll probably cave and run on Thursday .

                              Thanks for listening , Marc

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Lucie,

I'm training for my 2nd 1/2 Marathon (R&R Seattle in June) in which my 1st running event ever was the 2010 Seattle 1/2 Marathon.  I'm new to running but have a great trainer named Kathy (see Run with Kathy thread).  I trained using a combination of Hal Higdon's and Kathy's program and encouragement.  I made so many first timer mistake at the Seattle 1/2.

    1. Just running up to a honey buckle (portapotty) without checking to see if there was a line.  When I turned around I saw a line of about 200 runners waiting to kill me... lol

    2. Missing a water station.  Yikes that was a big mistake.

    3. Missing the GU station.  Never tried it but may for the 2nd 1/2

    4. Not pacing consistently.

    5. Have too much left in me at the last mile.

I'm learning that running and having a fast time all about efficiency, who's ever most efficient will have the best times.  Body weight, conditioning, fuel and hydration management and pacing is key.

So how was my run tonight?  5 miles at just below goal grace pace.  Tomorrow evening is the fun one.  It's speed training at the track.  8 x 400 at 3k Race Pace.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

my last run was rough... i'm in a rough patch mentally right now.  it's cold and there's still snow along my typical running routes outside so i've tried to take my training to the treadmill but it's just so hard to focus! i struggle just to get to 4 miles! i'm feeling a little defeated and unmotivated. i'm hoping we hit a 40+ degree day here soon so i can fall in love with my training again. right now, it's just not doin it for me.

i know i probably sound like a whiny baby because so many people around the country are happy running in sub 20 temps, but simply put, i'm not one of them. i dream of the day that i move to texas (in 3 years) so i won't have to deal with the winters in the NW anymore.

ok, i'm done venting. i just had to get that out.

    Hey Lucie,

I noticed you quoted Bob Moawab... I met Bob on a Corporate retreat back in 2004.  He was in remission from cancer.  I heard he passed away a few years ago.  Man, that Bob was sure inspirational.  Did he have a lot of energy.

Just completed 8 x 400 at 3k pace and 6 x 100 at full out sprint speed.  I'm pooped... Planning on a 4 miler tomorrow with the UW Medicine - Northwest Hospital and Medical Center running club.  Pace could be from 10.5min./mile to 8min./mile depending on who's running.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hi Lucy,

Have been running a few years and started in my early 40's, I was a lifetime smoker.  Ran a few races in the beginning and then after the race....quietly off to smoke one before the awards would start..  Only did that for half a season and decided .... really stupid...got to quit.  I had smoked since age 11...quit at age 44....

So, much determination in my running career.  Only ran "short" for a couple of seasons and was doing as you are....running at the edge and not really getting my breathe before you finish the race...an all out method to go faster.

Decided ...maybe 2 season into my time...to try marathoning...gosh I was so good at 5Ks and 10Ks...no reason not to think I could do marathons.

Soon discovered that marathons are different...train different and take a heck of lot more time to do.  Thus we get to my advice to your question.

Forget HR, forget BREATHING and most of all, forget GOING FASTER.

Go out IN THE MORNING early, start walking....then jogging....and listening to your tunes.  As you do this...20 or 30 minutes into it...you'll soon notice you can run faster and keep doing what you are doing...if you get where you are singing to your tunes...you are there!

NOW, you can run like that...for the next 2 or 3 hours and still sing to your tunes...

Next week, when you run that 5K...oh my gosh...this is short and I am hauling...

    ENJOY!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Hi Lucie... I skipped yesterday lol. I was grumbling about not having time to run yesterday to my husband - our daughter has basketball practice on Wed and it's dark before we get out of there and he pointed out that taking a day off isn't a bad thing. I just like how I feel better if I run, even if I just run for a little while. Today's run was good, just a 2.25 mile loop but it was sub 9 and if I had more time I'd have done a second loop. I think I'm going to go buy my new Nikes this afternoon and then run the loop again later to test them. I am learning that I'm horrible at pacing myself, I tried. The only place I can do that is on a treadmill. Thanks for all the motivation!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Dreamstate: I don't like running outside in sub 20 temps either, but where I live, people laugh at what I call cold since it doesn't get under 20 much. I'm probably okay from about 40ish up to maybe 75... any cooler or hotter and it gets miserable to run outside. I've been - or I was - running about 50/50 treadmill and outside, but I think I'm enjoying outside more now. The main issue I have with the treadmill is that I run faster outside, cover more distance quicker, so running on the treadmill is starting to be a drag. I run for mileage outside but on the treadmill I usually just run for time - ie I have to do a 20-30 min training 'run' so I set 30 min on the time and run for 30 min. I usually cover nowhere near the distance I'd make outside.

My last run yesterday was a grueling mid-week tempo 6 miler. I've got a 3 mile easy run today on the TM. The weather has been cold in Minnesota so I have been indoors on the TM for a few weeks. I'm really suffering mentally from this string of TM runs. It's supposed to get into the 30's this weekend so I'm going to get outside for my 12 mile long run this week. I can't wait!

Lunch run with a co-worker.   I typically run faster (7min. per mile average), but since Wed. nights are speed training nights, I always look forward to run with Ketty who's average has gone up from 10:30min/mile to around 9:30/min mile.  I keep pushing her and she's improving nicely.

Run Conditions: Blue sky, 50 degrees, no wind in other words EPIC!
