Hello Everyone

Hi All!

I just wanted to introduce myself...and by posting this I am hoping that it gives me more of an incentive to keep with the program. I am 39yrs old (turning 40 in May), 245lbs and have always hated running ever since I was a child. I have been feeling so lethargic and tired lately that I told myself that something has to change. About a month ago I finally quit smoking (have been a smoker ever since I was about 15yrs old), thank you Chantix! So last week I decided to walk during my lunch break at work. I was able to walk about 1.8 miles in 30 minutes. My shins feel like they are going to fall off, but it felt great! I found myself looking forward to getting out there every day. I started looking around online and found the C25K program...Im starting tomorrow, and I cant wait! I want to be a "runner".....I want to feel better about myself...the stopping smoking has helped soooo much. I'll try to keep posting every once in a while to let you know how it goes....Im not even so much worried about weight loss yet as I am just to try and get healthier (though I am trying to eat better). I have made a goal to myself to run my first 5K for my birthday. Again...Hello everyone, nice to meet you!

    Re: Hello Everyone

Congrats!  You may want to go to a running store and get fitted for a pair of shoes that are made for your body's style of running, if you haven't already.  If you are getting shin pain while walking, I would think that it would get worse with running, and the solution may simply be the shoes that you are training in.  There is nothing more discouraging than fighting through pain in the early stages.  Just food for thought.

Tombrett , Hello from one former smoker to another . I smoked for the better part of 25 years and quit September 21, 2009 at 1:00am . I was 40 years old and couldn't run a mile . Today I ran 10 miles and in five weeks I'll compete in my first Half Marathon . Congratulations ! Quitting was the best thing I've ever done for my self . As far as the running goes, there will be good days and bad days . Don't get discouraged .   Best of luck . Keep us posted .

    Re: Hello Everyone

Congrats on the decision to change your life for the better and seeking out support.  Keep active on the message boards and don't be afraid to ask questions.  I've found everyone here to be very positive and help keep the motivation level high.  You will struggle at times and there will be days that you don't want to go out and move.  But knowing that you have a support team behind you 100% should give you something to fall back on.

I do agree with the poster above about the shoes.  If I would have been fitted for proper shoes, I would have saved myself a lot of pain when I first started.

    Re: Hello Everyone

    Welcome aboard!

I am 52 years old and started running in 2007 to lose weight, so far I have lost 60lbs, lowered my bad cholesterol, raised my good cholesterol and lowered my blood pressure.

I am currently training for my 4th full marathon, the Southern Indiana Classic in April.

You might want to check out the "Penguins" forum on here as I am also a proud Penguin.

I have also started a blog dedicated to my journey from an overweight, out of shape couch potato to a marathon runner.

    Re: Hello Everyone

Hey Tombrett,  congratulations on quitting smoking and comitting to get healthy!!  It's never to late that's for sure!!  Four years ago I was in the same boat as you're in right now,  I was 49 going on 50, 60lbs over weight and smoked 3 packs a day..  I watched my son run a marathon and was so inspired that I decided to take my health serious, start running and try to do a marathon.  So I quit smoking, (thanks Chantix) started running, eating healthier and planned to run a marathon the following spring.  I lost 70lbs and started feeling absolutely awesome!  Ran my first marathon in spring of 2008  and have since run 4 more with 3 more planned for this year.  Running saved my life and I just love it so much!  So, even though there will be hard times coming up for you, just stay focused, patient and committed and you will and CAN do this!!  Good luck and welcome!!  If you ever need encouragement  just call out I bet there are tons of people on this site that either have gone through or are going through the same type of experience!!

Good luck,  you won't regret it!!

    Pete
