    Great long run today!

I had a great long run today, 17.25 miles.

I put a 30 second walk in every 30 minutes of running. I did get some other short stops waiting for traffic lights at several intersections.

I found a new path to run also, The North Shore Channel Trail.

About 2 miles of it was a crushed limestone path, I now have a respect for the trail runners here. I am much more efficient on asphalt & concrete, but it was a nice change.

Here are the details from my Garmin. My goals for the long runs are to not overwork & keep my heart rate low. An analysis of the Garmin data showed that about 44% of the calories burned were from fat. So in my long training I am hoping to train my body to do this all the time.

Kirk, VERY IMPRESSIVE! Tks for sharing.

Does the Garmin 305 give you all of that info? Does it take a rocket scientist to program it? This coming from someone who never learned to program her vcr and still is wondering what the heck to do w/  the mp3 player she got for Christmas.

    Wow,

My hero. You really are an inspiration. Thanks to you and the rest of the group, I just signed up for 2 5Ks and a 10K. But 17.25 miles, mind-boggling. One of these days I will try another 1/2 marathon and actually be able to run 70%, walk 30% instead of walk 90% and run 10%. Please keep on letting us know how you are doing.

    Thanks,

    Marie,

Yes this is right out of the Garmin 305.

It is really pretty easy to setup and then I just synch it to Garmin online and that stores all your runs.

Here is a link to todays run on Garmin go ahead and poke around on it to see what's there.

    Art, great run.

Kirk, you have convinced me. I"m gonna order a Garmin 305. Still have some Christmas $$'s stashed away, so might as well get something I want. My bd isn't until July and I don't wano wait that long.

Jack, I'm jealous. You beat me. I did decide to go out and try out my mp3 player that dh finally put some music on for me. Since I'm planning a long run tomorrow and my leg is sort of funky (I'm thinking now it may be a vericose vein developing) I didn't want to push it. So I ran 1.2 in 12 min and then ran walked another .6.

Ahh yes Kirk, the wayward ways of our youth. I can't really talk too much as I learned to ski on this same lake in March. I was 15. Wore some boys shorts & tshirt. My Mom had a fit when I got home.

This has been a really good week for me, workout-wise (other than the fact that I still can't run w/o pain on the "shingles side," that is).  I walked 6 miles three different days (twice it was 2x3 miles with a little time in between, but no more than two hours, and once non-stop).  Plus I weight trained and did the elliptical two days, plus walking to and from the gym both times.  Today there was a 30% chance of rain but I blew that off and walked anyway.  Wound up walking home in 44 degree temps. and light rain in shorts!  I didn't want to take the time to change back into my pants as I wanted to beat the deluge (which never came anyway).  We're expecting 72 degrees tomorrow, and then 30's and maybe snow on Monday!  The weather has just been all ove rthe place, but I sure enjoyed Thursday and Friday.  They were really gorgeous, 75 and 55 and sunny.

Now that I've walked about 10k non-stop for a "long one" two weeks in a row, I'm really itching to add another mile so hopefully the weather will be conducive to attempting that by the end of next week.  Spring couldn't come too soon for me, as long as it doesn't get hot and humid too fast!

Congrats to our two "big mileage" guys - I can't even imagine running 17 miles but I'd love to be able to do it again some day.  The last time I did that kind of mileage was on an 18-mile hike on the Katy trail about 12 years ago.  Our dogs were so beat afterward they just wanted to get in the van and sleep, nevermind supper.  Poor babies - they didn't know we were going to go so far and spent the first two hours romping back and forth on the trail adding even more mileage, until they finally figured it out.

A140 heart rate?! Man, I get to 100 on my walking warm up. Nice run and nicely done. Does the garmin track well in wooded areas or under trees in the city? I hate hearing midway through a run that my GPS was lost, thereby making all data but elapsed time useless. I try not to worry about my daily run times, but I like to see over time that I have improved. Thanks for letting us join you on your run today!

It does well. My normal runs are on forest preserve trails in and under lots of trees and it has never lost GPS signal. The only anomaly I have noticed was under heavy cover the pace was off a little, but in the end the overall stats were good. I have also used it on two downtown Chicago runs in between tall buildings and under and no lost GPS.

From what I remember when researching these before I purchased mine the accuracy has been greatly improved from before.
