Hi, I am thinking about starting to run for exercise, weight loss and well being. I have been overweight, it seems like forever. Recently my husband and myself moved to Arizona, and without doing much, I have lost 40 lbs. What a great jumpstart! So what I am wondering, what type of shoes do I buy? I dont want a terribly expensive pair, unless I become more serious about it. I despise walking, its gets me nowhere! I am also very heavy chested, and would like some feedback from the ladies on the best support for the girls. Any suggestions for me since I havent run since gym class 18 years ago! Thanks in advance to everyone!
Congratulations on your weight loss so far, that's awesome! Running is definitely a good way to continue with that and get some additional benefits as well.
For the shoes, I would really recommend going to a local running store and asking for help with a pair of shoes. I gave up buying shoes from places like Kohls/Target, etc because they are usually older models which means they have been sitting around for a long time. My first pair of real running shoes were just the most popular model at the the time and they ran about $100. They worked ok for me for a while, but eventually I went to a running store and got advice on getting a properly fitted shoe. Since then I've been 100% happy with all of my purchases and always go back. Yes, it will cost more, but the quality of shoe is so important to making sure that you will enjoy your running. I tend to spend about $125 on shoes and buy 2-3 pair a year based on my current training.
For the sports bra, these don't have to be super high end, my favorite brand currently is Champion and can be purchased at Target. I recommend you look at the "high impact" ones, try them on and make sure its "snug". I've lost a lot of weight recently myself and no longer need as much support, but sometimes I would even wear 2 bras to make sure the girls stayed in place ;o)
I also recommend you check out the C25K program that's highly popular on active.com, its a great introduction to running and at the end you'll be able to run a 5k.

Congrats on joining the running ranks, making the decision to live a healthier lifestyle by being proactive about it, and most importantly about losing 40 lbs!!! WOW! That's amazing girl!!
In regards to shoes for a newbie to the sport who is heavy-set (which I'm not sure if you are anymore after your dramatic weight loss!), I would definitely steer you towards the Adidas Response Cushion shoes, which as you can imagine from the name are very responsive, which means it provides great shock absorption and dissipates impact to prevent joint and knee pain. They also feature tremendous cushioning, which translates to COMFORT. Another feature to this shoe that you will appreciate living in the desert climate of Arizona is the ClimaLite technology lining in the interior, which helps wick moisture away from your feet during those hot sweaty summer runs.
If that weren't enough, this shoe is slightly cheaper than its competition running $85 for the latest models at Zappos. Plus, Zappos offers free shipping and free return shipping if you decide you don't like them or need another size! Nice and Simple, right?
Anway, I hope this helps, and I wish you much success in your running goals, regardless of the shoe you decide to go with!!! Happy Running Miss Poov!
I would suggest you find a local running store and getting fitted for shoes. You don't have to buy really expensive shoes there, just ones that fit really well.
As far as a sports bra, I am currently using a Champion or whatever brand they sell at Walmart or Target. I make sure I buy the one marked for high impact. And I try to buy it a size smaller so its really snug and keeps the girls in place.
