Laura!  So due to the foot of snow and ice and mush outside where I live I got on the hated treadmill today and did 3 miles....thanks for the suggestion to do interval type training...I don't know if I did it right but I just kept changing it up...slower...faster...slower...and it made such a difference in the boredom factor...and I just kept going...huge difference...at times I ran as fast as I could and then did 30 seconds to a minute of slower pace...and then changed it up and just kept going.  Thanks!  Now if they would just invent a 'virtual running experience' headset (like in the movies) where I am on the treadmill but am visualizing being on a beach in Tahiti!!

Tks Jo Ann for the info re elevation and gps plotting. I knew you would come through! I;m enjoying tracking the hear rate info too. Today it was showing a max of 159, which I would have thought it was higher. but it got to close to that range and stayed pretty much level. It did drop down a bit during the walk breaks, but shot right back up. Now, to figure out what my hr should be.

O2Run, you are in beautiful country, but I couldn't handle the extreme weather. I'm blessed to be in a place that has 4 distinc seasons per year.  Today was showing signs of spring & I am ready for it!

    slomo,

i live in kearney...it's in central nebraska, about 2 1/2 hours west of omaha/lincoln area. that would be fun to actually run with someone. i have a friend who's giving me tips, but she doesn't run anymore...and i think i'm too slow for anyone else...lol.

what marathons/triathlons did you do here? i've heard of the lincoln half, and kearney has a half in june called the buffalo trails run...a lot of people do that one.

speaking of running, time for me to "put my shoes on"...have a groovy evening!

    Marie,

If you import your Garmin information into a program like MapMyRun or set up a Garmin account, you will get street/map information, not just the dots. I've found the tracking to be pretty accurate as far as following the streets. It loses a little bit of accuracy if there is heavy tree cover and the elevation seems to lag reality a bit. Nice run for you today! I went just a 5K with one walk break and beat my goal time. Tomorrow it's a tempo run - boo, hisssss.

    Greetings all,

been a while since I lurked here last...ended the 2010 season with 10K on 31 dec  (1:19, and untimed 4k on 1 jan).  Since then weather and travel have conspired to keep me off the roads.  I did manage to get in two 5k+ waddles while on travel to san diego last week.  I have a course I've measured out thru the UCSD campus.  starts out with 800M uphill but ends with same 800M down!.   I had gotten to point where I had jogged up the entire 800m.   sad to say I've regressed to point where I only managed 400-500m before walking.  my normal walking pace is just under 14min/mile which is not much slower than my jogging pace around 11min/mile.  I am scheduled to complete the st patrick's day 8k in Wash D.C. on 13th - this is part of my prep for Marine Corp Historic Half in May.  I did manage a couple of treadmill workouts while oversea's in late jan/early feb.  I am interested in what others have done to keep moving thru the last few months.  for the most part, the weather here in Northern Va, hasn't been too bad but couple of storms coupled with travel have really cut into my road time.   I once was abe to only run on treadmill but since moving to pavement its hard

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

urun2me- thanks for the tip on mapmyrun...that's the program I have used since day 1 but I didn't know I could import my garmin info...I will be playing with that tomorrow! Interestingly though on my run this morning my garmin is showing less distance on a route I've used off map my run for months...unfortunately in the negative not more mileage but less! Bummed me out.

Marie mine shows the elevation also but I have no idea if what it says is correct...all I know is I have the hills generally with in the mileage it shows but whether the elevation itself is correct who knows!

Looking forward to spending time learning more about it tomorrow...rest day and a storm!!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Congratulations MamaBear That is absolutely awesome. 10 degrees!!!. You see I hybernate most of the winter and don't run at all. That's is why now i am about 13 lbs overweight and have to kill myself doing cardio. What happened was that two years ago I was running in the winter and I slid on a piece of ice and fell down a ditch off the road and broke my leg. It took me hours to climb back up and flag a car for help. Ever since that event i would not run in the winter. However, I don't control my eating during the season and due to the lack of inactivity I tend to gain over ten plus pounds. Maybe I have to pick up a winter sport like skiing or snowboarding. I am actually waiting until every speck of ice is completely melted before I venture myself to run out there. I guess I suffered from something called PAGOPHOBIA which is basically the fear of ice or frost, so when I read stories like yours they make me feel good that someone out there is running and as long as is not me life is good, LOL,LOL Keep up the good work girl!

Frankierunner28 - my goodness if that had happened to me I wouldn't run in the winter either....how painful and frightening.  Have you considered treadmill in the winter or some other exercise class, etc?  I really am not a fan of winter so a real hybernation actually sounds like a decent plan to me....just need to find the den

Hello MamaBear- I don't have a treadmill at home, or basically I did but sold it years before my injury happened because I couldn't stand running in one place without getting nowhere,LOL I managed to get to the gym when the schedule or snow didnt get in the way, but I wasn't going consistently. I am thinking about investing in an elyptical machine or some other cardio machine to have it here for the next winter so I  stay lean, but we'll see. Maybe what I need to do is struck pizza and chinese from from my menu, but they are my favorite comfort food Have a great day!!!

I started my training for the 13.1 in June.  I did a 1.72 miles at 11.2 minutes/mile. There were icy spots on the road so I had to slow down at some places.  Hope to continue 12 weeks training if I am injury free.

Frankierunner - I have a Precor Elliptical and I love it. I do all my cardio on it while building up to walking/running. It's very low impact and gives you a great workout. It's a nice change from pounding the pavement and works totally different muscles.

The GPS navigation system in my car has me driving on water on penninsulas, too.  That is really funny!  I think they just aren't perfect yet -- maybe in the next generation of systems they'll get that better.  But it is kind of startling when you first see it happen.  One of life's absurdities

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I have the same elevation issue with my Garmin 205.  Even running on a flat surface like our high school track, it shows elevation increases and decreases.  I think the distance and pace info are correct, but the elevation is not consistent.  Also, even though I start and end at the same exact spot, it shows that I've climbed more than I've descended (or the other way around).

On a different subject, here's a good slow cooker stew recipe, which I modified to suit my taste:

1 cup each lentils and barley (rather than all lentils)

4 cups each low-sodium chicken broth and water

1 can diced tomatoes (I use the zesty ones)

1 cup each chopped celery, chopped carrots and canned corn (I added these to the original recipe)

1 pound low-fat turkey sausage, cut into short pieces (if you want meat)

Cook for 4-5 hours.  Change the vegetables to suit your own taste.

Regarding my recipe above, I should have said to cook on "low" for 4-5 hours.
