I'm also interested in the answer to this question. I didn't even realize there was a qualifying time trial. I have friends who've done this swim, but thought it just took the willingness to do it and money to register...not a qual. event. Are there different dates to compete or levels?

There is a lottery for Alcatraz to enter and they draw the names closer to the date of the event.
