Best prerace breakfast

I don't no what happened, for my last race I had oatmeal, toast, and eggwhites. Thing didn't work out so good, my stomach was talking to be by the second mile.

Eat less before a race.  Also, make sure that you eat at least 1 1/2 hours before the race.

I'd lay off the eggs.  You don't need the protein for the race and it's slow to digest.

Agree with the two above.  I tend to go with a banana and peanut butter about two hours before the race with my morning coffee and some water.

I normally try to eat a quarter cup of grape nuts w/ unsweeten almond milk, topped w/ ground flax seeds and blueberries 90 mins before a run.

So far that has been working out for me.

    Re: Best prerace breakfast

having a hearty dinner the night before is helpful for energy. to wake up my metabolism in the morning before a race, i have one slice of wheat bread with peanut butter and literally 5 swigs of water.

guzzling down water right before a race doesn't do me any favors. it's best if i'm well hydrated days in advance. sometimes, i may eat a small bowl of oatmeal instead of the peanut butter and bread. i have a banana right after the race to help with muscle stiffness.

Most races I will do two pieces of toast with a little peanut butter and banana.  Stay away from milk and eggs in the morning.

A bowl of oatmeal or 2 breakfast bars, banana, orange juice or water, 1 1/5 to 2 hrs before the run....it works great for me.

    Re: Best prerace breakfast

So glad that I found this post! The last 3 races I've run (all 4.4 miles or less), my usual prerace breakfast of an English muffin, peanut butter, banana and a Propel Zero or Vitamin Water has not worked. I've either felt incredibly nauseous around mile 2, or I've had repeating peanut butter episodes (translation: burping) throughout most of the race. I think I'll try some of the other suggestions.

Has anyone had luck with doing a smoothie for breakfast? I was thinking that would be a good way to get some potassium/antioxidants in, and would probably be fairly easy/quick to digest...

    Re: Best prerace breakfast

I will eat about 2-3 hours prior to racing and what I eat will depend on the length of the race. I will drink one Ensure, eat a PowerBar, 1 piece of toast with peanut butter and banana's on top, 1 cup of coffee and water. Then I will consume 200 calories an hour leading up to the event and stop eating 30 minutes prior to the start of the race.

I primarily race half Ironman and full Ironman events, so this is what gets me going...

    Hope this helps!

    Brad

Not to be to indelicate, but…. Doesn’t that much fiber in the morning before a run require, um… elimination.. at some point.

I have not run my first race yet, and it’s something I’m a little worried about…

Most of the sites say a carb heavy Dinner, and a Fiber heavy breakfast 2 hours before a race. (still trying to fig out how to eat at 3am for a 5 am run ick)

But wont you need to… use the rest room with all the cab and fiber in your system?

    (Please forgive my ignorance)

It's not ignorant. Runner's trots can be a real problem for some people. You just need to experiment and see what works for you. I eat just enough for the engery, but make sure I never feel full.

I am running in my first 5k this Saturday and was wondering what was best to eat and how long before race time. Thanks for tips on things to eat and things not to eat.

of course everyone is different, but for me any distance under 7 miles all i have is half of a banana before. I agree with the 'no dairy' before a run

Good luck on your first 5K!!

Black coffee, a big glass of water, and a bagel with cream cheese.
