Unreasonable expectations?

Hi all, I'm a new runner-- just finished the 8th week of the c25k program. I'm feeling a little disheartened. I'm not making the full 2.7 miles in the 28 minutes the program suggests. The last two training days I hit 2.6 miles at the 28 minute mark. I'm not even doign a 10 minute mile. While I have never been a runner, I am pretty active and athletic. Is it totally unreasonable to think I should be doing a 10 minute mile at this stage?

Thanks for any input!! Like I said, I'm new and I really am clueless when it comes to running.

I'm new to running. I completed the couch to 5K program on March 11th.

First 5k, Seafarer's House,  completed April 2nd! 33:49

    There is no particular reason that you should expect to be running at a 10 minute pace.  The plan calls for running by distance or time, not both.  So if you're running by time, don't worry about the distance; if by distance, don't worry about time.  A lot of people finish C25K running at 11, 12 or 13 minute mile pace.

    Run at a pace that is comfortable for you and lets you finish the workout.  The usual standard is the "talk test" (also called a conversational pace).  Run at a pace that allows you to talk in short sentences.  It varies from person to person.  It's OK to talk to yourself if you run alone.

    Hi!  I'm a fairly new runner myself. I've been pretty active for most of my life. I started running after my 2nd child was born. I did c25K and it  worked but I was not able to complete 3.1 miles in 30 minutes. Heck, I still can't! My first 5K I did in 34:41 and my second ( this morning in fact) I did in 33:13. I'm kind of competitive ( my husband would laugh at the "kind of" part) and it bothers me that I'm slow. But I try to remind myself that the only person I'm competing against is me, not to worry about anyone else. To me, the C25K program main goal is to get you running continuously for at least 30 minutes. Once you're able to do so, you can work on your speed:) Good luck and keep running!

    Well, they normally say you should either increase your speed or your distance. So atm you're increasing your distance each time as you run for longer so worrying about your speed on top of that isn't really a stress your body needs added.


    I would probably throw the complete distance as such out the window for now. Run your timed intervals as the program says at a comfortable speed for you, then when you've completed the program and are running the full 30mins at a comfortable speed for you see how far your getting. Then look at increasing your speed to get further during that time by adding speed training days to help increase your speed (ie sprint intervals etc). That said - you still may not be able to cover a complete 5k at your comfortable speed, so if you did do some speed training and where still not hitting the 5k mark, but wanted to be running the full 5k then I'd increase the amount of time your running for so that you can do the full 5k, however long that took. Does that all make sense lol.

    As a new running myself I struggled with the same mindset.  Since I started the C25K program the biggest hurdle for me has been mental.  Once I realized what others have pointed out (distance OR time) I have become much more comfortable with myself and running.  Remember that with the C25K program you are simply establishing the foundation of being able to run for 30 minutes straight.  Once you have the foundation you can focus on your individual goals.

    My first race last fall I was running 10 minute miles and was very pleased with my performance, thank you.  If it matters, I can tell you that you'll surely have lots of folks finishing behind you at that pace.  My advice to you would be to manage your competetive streak and try to enjoy the running more, both practices and races.  Remember - what you're doing is really marvelous - every step of it!

    I'm a practical runner/trainer and the progress does ebb and flow.  Perhaps you are training too hard.  I normally run every other day from 1.5 to 3 miles.  If I want to increase my distance or speed I'll give myself an extra day off of running and do something else active.  Changing up the activity may give you the healing and the boost you need.  I may bike ride or play frisbee or something.  I find frisbee can be invigorating as it usually involves some sprinting here and there if you stand far enough apart and it can keep you engaged.  Indian Creek Greenway has a nice field.  Check your pulse rate too and see if you have enough carbs in your diet.  You may be running on a lean diet.

    Wow, Debbie Downer much? You sign up for a 5k to improve your motivation to fulfill your goals, experience the excitement of a race day, and typically your times are faster in a race-type atmosphere. Most of us are not "competing" against all the other participants. All of your posts so far are negative, and I think you're being an intentional louse.
