Home Page character limitations

Is there anyway that you could put a character counter in on the welcome page? I'm so tired of entering new information to my welcome page and then saving it. I then go to preview it and it chopped off the bottom part of my welcome page because I have exceeded the character limit. I have now lost all my sponsor information which was listed at the bottom of my page.
If anything, there should be something in place to prevent you from adding more information then the page can hold. Being able to add stuff and just have the eteamz machine start chopping off the bottom of the page WITHOUT ANY WARNING does not make any sense.
Hi kevinmcl,
This is on the ongoing suggestion list. We just can't guarantee if or when it would be done.
Kathy,
eteamz support
This makes no sense at all.
How am I supposed to know when I am exceeding the character limit????
Is there ANY WAY to check this BEFORE I hit save?????
Hi,
The character limit is around 64,000. That's a
lot
. You'll hit it if you have a lot of HTML code or if you're copying and pasting from Word for example. Word adds a lot of characters behind the scenes that you don't see when looking at the doc. There are very few people that actually hit the limit, but if they do then one of the two items I described is the culprit.
We dont have a character counter on our end. I'm not aware of any off hand either. If you hit the limit, you'll need to split up the article, into two separate news articles for example.
I understand how people reach the limit.
The problem I have is that how do I know whether I have reached the limit before saving my changes????
The only time I find out whether I have reached my limit is that it just starts chopping things off from the bottom of the page. As I said before, I have now lost all my sponsor information.
So once again, my question is, how do I know if I have reached my limit BEFORE saving so I dont needlessly end up losing data from the bottom of the page?
Hi again,
As we mentioned, we don't have a feature where it tells you the character limit. Very few actually reach the limit. I'm not aware of any out there (a program you can download for example) but you can certainly do a search on Google for example to see if there's a "character count" type program.
I am going to post to the message center with a revised question.
I was a little shocked to see that the Message Center actually has a character counter in place. If one is there, how difficult can it be to put one on the welcome page? Even if it only counts characters. Then people, like myself, would know that I now am using - for example - 69,000 characters. I would then know if I save what I have entered, that I will lose information. However, knowing that I am now at 69,000 characters, I can then tweak my welcome page to trim information off the page without just losing the bottom parts of my page.
That is correct, there is one there. They are two completely separate features....it isn't a "quick addition." And honestly, there aren't many people that even get close that that limit on the Welcome & News folders. I'd much rather we develop new features that the majority of our uers can use. ![]()
I hit the limit a lot because I copy things from MS Word from my coaches or league president to post on the website. I've just learned to live with it, but there are two things you can do to make sure you're not bringing a lot of extra Word "baggage" along.
1. Copy the text into Notepad before you paste it into your site - that will clear out any behind the scenes junk.
2. Paste your text into the Welcome message or News item then click on the little "scrub text" icon in the format area. That will also clear out behind the scenes formatting junk.
After doing either one of the above items, you can then "pretty up" your text using the formatting buttons.
