Bike Transport

all-
i'm a new triathlete who broke the bank to participate in the chicago tri in late august. now that i've put myself in the poor house i've run into the dilemma of how to transport my bike from nyc to chicago. I looked at carrying cases for the plane, but they're incredibly expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions or places where i could perhaps borrow a case for a smaller fee? thanks!

put in a big cardboard bike box and ups/fedex it to a chicago bike shop for them to reassemble it? that is what I did for a race on the left coast.

Check with your local bike shop and the race website they may have information on transporting your bike. Most bike shops pack your bike in a cardboard box they have from another bike. They will ship it for you most big races have bike shops in the area that will receive your bike and put it back together for the race. If you do not like this option some bike shops will rent you a box for checking you bike on the airline. There is a cost involved in flying your bike and you will also have the issue of needing to assemble your bike once you arrive. Personally I like option one and just do the reverse when the race is over to get your bike home.

Only because you brought up your financial situation, don't be surprised if the airline tries to charge you for an oversized package (although it may be under the 45lbs it needs to be the dimensions are usually too big on a bike case). Just play dumb and poor (I don't have to play either---I just am) and be really nice at the counter.
