hip bursitis?

Hi everyone:

I foolishly started running 30 seconds per kilometer faster than my usual pace, which caused hip pain, and then went out and ran a half marathon (4 miles further than I'd run before). Now, when I run, I get hip pain after about the 2nd mile which gets worse when load is put on it (ie going up a hill). It doesn't hurt when I stop, but I get an ache if I get up out of a chair after sitting for while.

Sounds to me like hip bursists. Has anyone had it before? How much time do you recommend that I take off running? I was thinking 2 weeks. Is there any therapy I could do during this time?

Re: hip bursitis?
I had hip bursitis along with tendonitis. I ended up not running for about 3 months. I tried a cortisone shot, but it didn't help. I ended up going to physical therapy. That helped. I still have some pain from time to time, but its nothing compared to before I went to PT. Go to the doc and see what he/she says. It could be tendonitis or bursitis, or both. Here's an article on it:

Thanks Shadow.

It sucks being 36. Everything breaks a lot faster and takes ages to repair.

Thanks for the good wishes and right back at you. Hopefully yours is just a strain. And yes, at 43, everything takes a little longer to heal, but I learned a lot from it, especially about keeping everything strong to support running.
