what's a stress fracture feel like?

here's my story:
got started up about six months ago, got to about 15-16 mpw, feeling really good. was running about 7:30-8:00 minute miles and really proud.

6 weeks ago i got started marathon training for december.i got moving, had changed my stride to my forefoot and when i got to my 6-7 mile days i got a lot of pain in my hips and shins. after 2 weeks recovering from shin splints i moved my stride back to my heel (more of a midfoot landing, really) and all seemed to be good.

now, just last weekend i ran 6 miles, day off, then 3 miles and the shin pain returned. i decided not to push it and haven't run in a week, but i have a pain in my shin still.

difference this time is that while the shin splint pain was at the top and bottom of the shin, this is n the middle. the shin split pain pretty much only hurt when i moved my legs, this pain can be at any time, even lying down. the splint pain was consistent while the leg bore weight, the new pain comes and goes, at times throbbing.

the pain is still medial, not right in the front on the bone, so i've some hope, but does this sound familiar to anyone? more to the point, does it sound like a stress fracture? i'm lgoing to see the doc on it this week, but i wanted to get some input before i look like an alarmist dork.

I had a stress fracture in 2000 in my foot. It was severe pain. All the time. I would get a bone scan just to make sure. Whatever you have, needs to be diagnosed and corrected so you can continue running anyways. I think if there is one specific point on your leg that hurts then that may be more indicative of a stress fracture. Good luck with the dr.

I had a femoral stress fracture a few months after I started running the first time in Jan 2005. The pain was constant until I'd been on crutches a few days or medicated. Took about a month to heal. Sounds like you need at least complete rest of it, and probably a Dr.

Re: what's a stress fracture feel like?
My medial tibial stress fracture hurt all the time, just walking around at work and running was not possible. It hurt when I would "push off" on each step--not the heel plant. Before the final diagnosis, I thought I had shin splints and ran through them--eventually I could not run a block. I read about the "hop test." I could not bring myself to hop on the right leg when I thought it was shin splints. The sore spot was about six inches above my ankle on just on the inside of my shin--right leg. The bone scan confirmed stress fracture--I ended up with about 4 months of no running and 2 months of very gradual building up running time.
