I was fortunate enough to get a private message from the worm, slug, low life! I was very honored! It was my first fan mail!

That must mean that I did even better than I thought in the HM! But, I do need to tell him.....I am NOT fat! Thank you very much!

T Griffin.  Congrats to you and the whole team M!  I am so jealous. I have only run by myself except for the one race I ran last year.  I think I live in a running desert!

Slapstick.  Good going. 10k in under an hour! I was born and grew up in San Diego. (I miss the area, but not Cal politics.)  I have noticed the same thing with the races lately. In the one I ran and the one I volunteered to man the finish line last year, there was no separation of runners, walkers or times.  Many years ago I ran the Marine Corps Marathon and they were very organized and had us separated into rough groups with signs and some folks reminding us to pick our respective places. There were so many people that it took me over a minute to cross the start line.  In my 5k “race” last year I got toward the end of the starting shoot where I should have and had to dodge walkers for the first half mile. It was kind of surprising.  Still a lot of fun and the new Chip Timers are great.

Jo Ann.   Congrats on the Mercedes Half.  Great report also! One minute a mile faster than last Nov and only a 30 second walk break on the hills is absolutely super!  Take it easy on yourself for the next few days, you deserve it.

Mimi.  Congratulations on the great run and the PR!   Your husband owes you dinner and a massage!  It was great that you and Jo Ann got to meet each other.  You both had a great run.

Ignore the trolls. They have mental problems and inferiority issues.

Thanks to each of you for the write ups.  I hope to contribute one myself sometime in the spring. Your results are respected and the reports get me motivated!

Currently I am training for the Southern Indiana Classic Marathon in April. My goal is to run the whole thing without having to stop and walk.

I have started a blog to document my journey from an overweight, out of shape couch potato to a marathon runner.

I would appreciate any and all comments, questions, suggestions, critiques and constructive criticisms as my goal is to make my blog a really good runner's blog especially for those of us over the age of 50.

Hey I got another report!  Reading all or your entries motivates me to keep entering races and push myself.  Thank you all.

The San Diego Saint Patrick's day 10k was 3/12/2011.

Four (4) miles of it went around Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park. I don't run well there or something.  The island looks small on the map but it is a long 4 mile circuit.

The volunteers were GREAT calling split times at all 6 mile markers.  That was great.

It looked like a LOT of pizza and beer being served to all interested and legal participants.  At 8am in the morning!

PJ and other San Diego  Rock'n'roll Half marathon participants - I would like to hear how training for June 5th is going.

    slipstick:

Congrats on your great time in your recent run!!

Your race times are showing the hard work you have been putting in in regard to your training, hooray!!

My plan was to race a 1/2 marathon each month as part of my training for my next marathon, June 5th in the San Diego Rock n' Roll!!!

Hoping to finish under 4 hours this time ..... finished in 4:10:30 in my first marathon in January 2011.

While on a training run on the trails in early Feb., I fell on some ice/snow, took a few minutes to recover and still ran 10 miles. No pain or injury, I concluded.

However, later that week, my right knee felt strange and did look 'swollen' but I ignored it and ran 10 miles of intervals, cycle 2 miles, elliptical 20 minutes!!  Knee was SWOLLEN that evening.  Been icing it every evening since then which  seemed to help. Took a 3 day rest and still ran 6-12 miles every two days (instead of every other day) in anticipation of my Feb. race.

Anyway, I ran the 1/2 marathon on Feb. 20th, a lousy day of running with the rain, cold temps, breezy conditions and trying  to get over congestion, sniffles, sore throat, etc. I was not happy with my run overall although I finished under my usual 2 hrs (can't remember my official time, lol). However, at 10.5 mile marker, my right knee felt like it "popped" into place, I slowed down to see if anything else would happen but nothing did ........... got into higher gear the last 2 miles and finished strong.  But it was swollen that night.  Icing it since then.  Took a week off of running which helped some. But the swelling is keeping my knee from being bending normally so I think I must have torned, strained my ligaments/muscles in my right knee when I fell.  The swelling has decreased tremondously especially being consistent with icing it every evening regardless if I run or not.

So, because of the knee issue: had to look at the overall goal of being healthy and fully healed for my June marathon so I had to back out of a 1/2 marathon on 3/12/11 (past Saturday), first time ever in my life!! bummer!!

The race was a HM trail race (my preference) on a very technical trail, very tough course .........translation: would have been lucky to finish under 2 hrs!!  lol!!

I would not have been happy with my finish time anyway (I know) and the risk of re-injuring my knee is too great.  I think I did the smartest thing .......... although it was disappointing ....... but I did put in a 9 mile run that morning. LOL!

Anyway, I am resuming my usual training schedule of running every other day, alternating long runs (12-16 miles) and short runs (6-10 miles) with some intervals and finally, hill repeats last evening!!  YAY!!  Knee is holding up and icing it daily has been my lifesaver!!  I have continued to incorporate weight training, cycling, and elliptical as well.

    I have registered for:

1/2 marathon race in Knoxville, TN on 4/3/11.

I might run another 1/2 marathon on 4/16/11 in Austin as I will be on a business trip to TX during that time ...... not sure (???).

Another 1/2 marathon in Shiprock, NM on 5/7/11.

Then my June marathon in San Diego ....... YIPPEE!!

Sorry for the longer story made longer .......LOL!

You are doing great though!!  KEEP IT UP!!

Re: 50 and over, 5k and beyond - Race Reports

Yesterday I did the Rocket Run 10 miler in Mooresville AL.  This is a low key event put on by the local running club  - no sponsors, no shirt, with prizes being Fleet Feet gift certificates. 195 runners. This is a very flat run through farm country - actually very boring if you are not in the pack "racing".  Now I've done 3 HM's to date, but not a specific 10 mile race.  On January 1, when I was out of shape after virtually taking off for the holidays, I did a 4 mi race at a relatively slow pace. But since then, I've been building back, and did an HM, a 5K and a 10K. Plus last week, to prep, I did a slow 10 miles as my long run, running alongside other friends who were doing a 12 hour race (relay) on a 1 mile loop.

So I showed up Saturday to do this - not really psyched up about it - but ready to test myself, because the Country Music HM (Nashville) is 6 weeks away.  Temp 58 deg, rising to 65, light breeze, partially overcast - it would be a cool summer race day, but rather warm for a spring race.  Nice enough though. My last run was Weds, though I did swim & spin on Friday.

The race started off with a sprint thru several narrow blocks of this historic old town.  By the time I emerged from the town to an out-and-back 2 mile road, I was already firmly in the position of almost last place  (2 people were behind me, 1 didn't finish). That's when this definitely turned into a training run.  At my last HM 4 wks ago, I had managed to maintain ~13:15 mm (79:34) thru the first 6 miles, and in my 10K 2 wks ago, I did 12:47mm, so I targeted 13mm (78 min) for the 1st 6 miles - (actual 77:44).

Now one problem with being nearly last in a rural race is that the sheriff car warns drivers to slow for runners, and will escort behind you.  So from mile 2 - 6, it was a traveled enough road that the escort was there - and they didn't let people pass us. ARGGH! Luckily I behaved well enough (run at the edge of the road) and the patrol car moved up to the next group (1 girl then 2 further on running side-by-side).  But drivers still did not pass me - until I dodged to the other side of the road to let them drive through. So the only thing that kept this stretch thru farm land from being totally boring was the game with the slow drivers.

Mind you, this whole time, I am running MY race and clocking very good times FOR ME. I ran 4.62 miles in 1 hour, and reached 8.97 miles in 2 hours. Miles 7-9 slowed to an average of 14:15mm (my knees & legs were feeling squirrely), but I knew if I reached 9 miles by 2 hours that I could finish in 2:15. Not having to "save" myself any longer, I pushed it up and did the last mile in 13:12 (including the last 0.1 mile sprint at near a 10mm pace). And -oh yeah- with 1 block to go, I sprinted right by those two girls who ran/walked side-by-side! Except for them, the last finisher (bless her heart) came in 37 mins later.

Final time: 2:13:37 (13:22mm). I actually beat my 1/1/11 4 mi pace (13:30) and HM pace (13:54), but not my 10K pace (12:47). And got 2nd in my age group (LOL!), 28 mins behind #1. I'll take that gift cert - cause momma needs a new pair of shoes!  This was a fast course and strong competition up front. Several age group state records for 10 miles were made, and the winner finished in 52:45. He passed me on the way back (his 8.5 mi) when I was reaching 3.5 mi.

I'm confident that for the next HM, even though it is hillier, I can beat 3 hrs.  I'm going to work on stregthening my endurance pace past 6 miles, and add more hill work and tempo runs. I have a 5K next Saturday, then nothing till the HM.

You most definitely are a Runner!  Your post here was very interesting and full of good informaiton that is useful for an amateur and delusional one who is more of a plodder than runner.  So, Thanks for sharing this experience.

I am very new to running/plodding, but dream of being able to go a distance like this.  I have alot of work ahead to achieve that.  Your words inspire and also provide some equipping for my goals to become a reality.
