Congratulations on your anniversary!!! You are doing awesome and I wouldn't worry about making a decision, just go out and do the best that you can and things will take care of themselves. Don't put any added pressure on yourself, each race is different and you just need to have your body let you know what kind of race you will run on that particuliar day!! Best of Luck, I'm sure you will rock it!!

Thanks to every one for their comments.  It really was an amazing event.  I'm still recovering but I had the honor of being out there with people who go through a lot more than I do, including a couple of people I saw with leg amputations for war injuries.  Once I recover, back to my race training so I can run like so many inspiring runners on here.  We are a force to be reckoned with aren't we!

    JosephTree,

Although I occassionally do the treadmill barefoot, most of my running is in the Vibram Five Finger.  I have 3 pair, original version, ks0 and the Bikilas.  Started out with the original version and found that the high back irratated my right achilles.  Got the KSO's (removed the velcro strap) and those worked well, but a bit difficult to get on.  The got the bikilas, they're easier to get on the feet but have a thicker sole.  I've now run races in all of them and the KSO works well on streets, while the Bikilas are better for trail runs.

I'm feeling pretty good about how my calf is healing.  Theres just a bit of tightness in the right calf.  If I massage it, I can find the tight muscle almost in the middle just slightly toward the outside.  The left side in the same spot feels just a tinge if I massage, but don't feel it otherwise.  When I started with the Vibrams last year the right calf had several pulls and I kept doing a week or two of rest and then start again.  Found jumping rope helped to get me over the hump that time.  This time, which seem to work better, was I would row a 5K on an erg, followed by 20 - 30 minutes of running with distance covered from 1.25 - 3 miles.   The erging/rowing got the heart rate up and mentally didn't feel like I had to push it when doing the run.  I'm not a patient person, so anything that keeps me from trying to push it too quickly is good.

Had a good training run last night.  4 miles in less then 32 minutes, with the first mile at ~9 minutes and 7:20 for mile 3.  Hoping to get in a 6 mile run tonight.

    Ray

I returned from vacation on Sunday and returned to training on Monday after missing 8 days. I actually felt good and fresh. Monday and Tuesday were interval training and put in 5 miles today. I'll be racing a 5K this Sat. and a half-marathon on Sun. I'd rather not have 2 races in 2 days but both are on our grand prix circuit. If I have any chance of placing in the top three in the yearly standings I have to run all the races and hope some of the others miss a few. The NASCAR fans may find it interesting that the HM starts and finishes in the infield of the Talladega Superspeedway. I would be interested in checking the websites of some of the forum members running clubs. Our site is annistonrunners.com. Run safe.

    Doc,

I can certainly empathize with you on the Grand Prix races. I have to do one each month and don't dare to miss one for fear of falling out of the top three.

Rcuriel, Good for you!  Sounds like you've got your running on a good track right now.  I only have the Bikilas, but I like them for when I'm not out BF.

Satuday morning I have my first race of the year, a fairly level out and back 10 miler in Kutztown, PA. It looks like it's not going to be the nicest sort of morning, with temps about 31 or so and maybe some snow or drizzle.  Oh, well.  I plan to take it easy, as a sort of fun, slightly faster distance workout in prep for my HM in a month.

Re: the sore calf:  Mine gets sore in the same place you described, I think -  about 4" below the knee crease and slightly to the outside.  I can feel a well defined knot or band of muscle there.  It's getting a few days to rest and lots of massage with arnica before the run.

    Run well!
