JosephTree,
Although I occassionally do the treadmill barefoot, most of my running is in the Vibram Five Finger. I have 3 pair, original version, ks0 and the Bikilas. Started out with the original version and found that the high back irratated my right achilles. Got the KSO's (removed the velcro strap) and those worked well, but a bit difficult to get on. The got the bikilas, they're easier to get on the feet but have a thicker sole. I've now run races in all of them and the KSO works well on streets, while the Bikilas are better for trail runs.
I'm feeling pretty good about how my calf is healing. Theres just a bit of tightness in the right calf. If I massage it, I can find the tight muscle almost in the middle just slightly toward the outside. The left side in the same spot feels just a tinge if I massage, but don't feel it otherwise. When I started with the Vibrams last year the right calf had several pulls and I kept doing a week or two of rest and then start again. Found jumping rope helped to get me over the hump that time. This time, which seem to work better, was I would row a 5K on an erg, followed by 20 - 30 minutes of running with distance covered from 1.25 - 3 miles. The erging/rowing got the heart rate up and mentally didn't feel like I had to push it when doing the run. I'm not a patient person, so anything that keeps me from trying to push it too quickly is good.
Had a good training run last night. 4 miles in less then 32 minutes, with the first mile at ~9 minutes and 7:20 for mile 3. Hoping to get in a 6 mile run tonight.
