I am a new member here and wanted to share and hopefully get some encouragemnent and tips along the way.

I am not new to athlethics...I was an exceptional High School and Collegiate Athlete...Football and Shot Putter.

I got lazy, ended up over 450 lbs and had several co morbid conditions , hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea....Being a nurse, I knew I had hit rock bottom!!!

In August 2009 I started a quest...In February 2010 I had Gastric Bypass....Now in April 2011 I am down nearly 200 lbs and feel great., more diabetes, no more hypertension, no more sleep apnea, but still a STRONG URGE to compete.,

I have always liked running...I ran a few rabbit starts in high school for the mile and two mile even then when i weight 280lbs

Any training tips, gear, nutrition or similar stories I would love to hear them

I start my training for the 2011 Steamtown marathon on April 11th...I have been exercising and loving the feelings its produced.  I have several 5K and 10K races planned throughout the Spring and Summer.

I have a great wife and support system with my kids.

Thanks for letting me share!

Hopefully your race is next year, not in 10 days?  Pick a training plan, get a good pair of running shoes, replace them when needed (every 300-500 miles).  Start slow, and don't increase your miles by more than 10% in a week, after 2 or 3 increase weeks go back down on your miles then pick the next week up at where you left off.  Hal Higdon has great free plans that work well.  Eat to train, not train to eat.  If you can find a running group or a pal that always helps me.  Most of all try to make it a lifetime goal, not just 1 marathon.  Have fun and enjoy the adventure.    A quote I like to think about when training get's tuff and it will is:  There will be days that you don't know if you can run a marathon...but there will be a life time of knowing that you have."Marathons are all different, but each time you cross that finish line, you hunger for the next's a great feeling of accomplishment!  Keep up your great work.  Phillip

Is 100% correct eating healthy is the most important thing.  My comment (eat to train not train to eat) I have a lot of friends who run so they can eat/drink more.  You should eat to assist your training.  Card loading is not needed and I think dated also.

Kirk is right; you will get lots of support here from all of us.  I can't give you any tips for marathon training as I have never done one.  However, it appears that you've picked a good long-term training plan that should ramp up your mileage slowly over the next six months.  Overtraining is just as bad as undertraining, so plan ample rest days.  Your body needs time to recover and rebuild.  I change my shoes every 400 miles, but since you're heavier, you may want to change at 300 miles.  If you haven't already, find a good specialty running store and have them fit you properly.

Please keep us informed about your progress and pass along any helpful hints.  Kirk and I are in Chicago and you're in the Philadelphia area, so we can't run together, but we can certainly support you from a distance.

You may also want to join us on our "'Calling all Penguins" forum.  There are lots of beginning and returning runners there and we have lots of fun supporting each other and reading each other's race reports.  Some post photos too.  If you're on the high side of 50, there's a 50+ forum too.

Good luck and please continue your posts.
