Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
add me to this group of injuries....my first real running injury. I was learning chi running up hill...and I guess I screwed something up.... oh well - I hate to be sidelined - I get real grumpy. I guess it is time to work on my swimming technique for a couple of weeks.
I don't want this to effect my running for a long long time....so I would rather take a couple of weeks off...

why not stretch ? is there an explanation for this ?

anyway to speed up recovery ?

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
guys and girls, we are all in the same boat, we all want to run, but we all have a calf/thigh problem.

My advice is let's take it easy and quit running for a little while, even if it s*cks. Race season is over, the weather is terrible (at least in the East) and it's better to heal completely than getting something worse later.

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
I just tried swimming and the eliptical - and spinning....

I think I will stick to the elipical and the swimming - it was more fun than the spinning and kept my heart in the MAF zone..... or below MAF

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
sure - I am a bad swimmer - I won't drown -but I do not have perfect from - my crawl sucks.... but sure - I stay below maf - I kind of swim like a frog - great leg workout !

Spinning is cycling - on the stationary but keeping a high cadence...about 90 rpms.... at different resistences and body positions. great aerobic workout.

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
how is everyone's calf doing ?

Mine got better after a week off of it..... I was spinning and swimming.... instead of running.

So of course I tried running..... and I injured it again a couple of days ago...but this time not so bad.... so I am taking another week off and starting back again on a treadmill slowly..... till I am confident to get back on the street.... I think the uneven sidewalks irritated it....

although now I am starting to like swimming...

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
I knew my calf injury was minor but didn't want it to get worse and jeopardize (sp?) my upcoming marathon. Everything I saw said a level-1 calf injury heals in a week. So I took off 5 days completely from running. I started back tentatively the first day, but everything was great. I ran 55 miles last week total with no signs it was ever injured.

Re: possible muscle tear - calf - what to do?
Calf strains are nasty little buggers. I've always had to be careful with mine as they notoriously tight. I was sidelined for 6 weeks of absolutely no running several years ago. For whatever it's worth, I would tell anyone to not push a calf strain,as the muscles(soleus and gastro) work hard to propel you forward. The soleus is the hard one to heal. I still occasionally feel a glitch in my calves, and the only form of stretching that works for me is Active Isolated Stretching.
With your legs flat on the gound, you contract your shin for 2 secs, relax and repeat 9 more times. You can do other variations on this and it absolutely works. you contract the opposing muscle for the one you want to stretch, and never hold for more than two secs.
As for balms,I love traumeel.
