Re: Stengthening the IT Band
You really can't strengthen the band itself (which is an extension of the tensor fascia latae muscle) but you can strengthen that and the other hip abductor muscles attached to the band (specifically, the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus)

This Running Times article has a good explanation of the mechanics plus some strengthening & stretching exercises you can do for the ITB

I had trouble trying to work out how this is done, but found someone has actually made a pictorial guide. It was easier to follow- Is it correct?

Re: Stengthening the IT Band
Yeah, that pictorial guide is correct. In a sense, it's a way of duplicating the running motion without running

From my experience with that exercise, it does hit the muscles attached to the IT Band really well. However, if your band is still sore or strained, you will also get a sensation in the band itself.

As the ITB gets closer back to health, the tension you feel on the band itself pretty much disappears, as I've discovered. Obviously, that doesn't mean you should stop doing that or any other of the hip abductor exercises/stretches for the ITB
