Sore Calves

Any one have any advice for sore calves? I am working up to training for a marathon in May. Right now I am just building a solid base, starting my long run training in January. I am not running very far yet, about 2-3 miles a run, a couple times a week ? about 4 days a week. I only started this building about 3 weeks ago and my calves just recently have gotten really sore ? like this week. I stretch before and after each run. I am not doing a lot of hills or anything, just the occasional one that pops up wherever I happen to be running, but small hills if anything. When I am running my calves just really start to hurt and be sore about 5 minutes in, more in the bottom portion, but back and bottom of them mainly, almost feels tight and sore becoming progressively more painful. This has never happened to me before. I have run a marathon before just this past year and been running since. I have new shoes but they are exactly what I used to have and I am not having any problems/soreness with them so I don?t think it is the shoes ? never had any problems with my old pair either. I am working on increasing my pace from a 12mm to a 10mm. Any one have any ideas or advice? Should I stretch more, do a specific stretch, change something ? anything at all? I did take about 3 days off of running and it went away, but my first run out again it started all over.

Thanks for any help or advice!!

Re: Sore Calves
I struggled with "back of the calf" soreness for months. For me, I traced it back to achilles tendonitis, and could specificall point to the spot where the tendon meets the muscle. Many people in this forum gave me good advice and I gathered from them that it is an "overuse" injury. This is what I did:

Took one week off from running
Finger massage on the point of pain (will hurt for a bit)
Ice after each run and after the above massage
Temporary use of heel lifts (not heel cushions)
Shortening my stride, increasing stride rate
Temporary use of ibuprofen

I hope some of this helps. Good luck.
