Mountain Bike TO Road Bike?

Just finished my 2nd Sprint Triathlon and think I'm ready to graduate from my mountain bike (trek). Need suggestions on basic road bikes. Don't want anything top of the line or too expensive, but something that will last me a while. I plan to do Sprints and hopefully Olympics with this bike.

Thanks,
becky

Re: Mountain Bike TO Road Bike?
The best advice I could give would be to purchase a used triathlon or time trial bike. Make sure you get the right size bike... it's VERY important. If you want something new, go to a bike shop and find an aluminum road bike with decent components. There's Raleigh's out there for $400.

I'm in the same boat but am having a hard time finding places that sell used tri bikes; any advice?

todd.ryan,

If have not done so, seek out triathlon clubs near you and meet the various members. In my area, someone always seems to be wanting to upgrade their bike ... and will to sell their used one to help fun their new one.

Re: Mountain Bike TO Road Bike?
I actually disagree with the other posters. I think you should buy a road bike before buying a tri bike. Why?? A road bike is much more versatile than a tri bike. Generally, they are better for climing (and descending). They have a less aggressive geometry, making them more comfortable for long training rides, especially early in the season. Also, it's a better bike to ride on when on a group ride. You shouldn't use your aerobars when riding in a group or drafting off someone. I would recommend going to a reputable bike shop and telling them what you want to use the bike for and what your budget is. Someone at the shop should be a certified fit specialist. If not, find a shop that has one! The most important thing in buying a bike is fit. For example, people will say they want a Trek because that's what Lance Armstrong rides. But, if the Trek doesn't fit them well, then it's a piece of junk!

You can also add aerobars to a road bike and get a decent aero position on it. It won't be as aggressive as a tri bike, but for now it's a better idea. Then, if you stick with the sport and want to buy a higher-end, more competitive bike, spend the money and invest in a good tri bike.

Re: Mountain Bike TO Road Bike?
Ditto on martini05. I just graduated from a hybrid to a road bike. I went to a reputable bike shop that my trainer recommended. They spent a good two hours just picking it out with me and another two on the fitting. I LOVE my bike. LOVE it. Okay, with the clipless pedals it scares me a little too.

Anway, I asked my trainer (who primarily trains triathletes) which I should get and he said a road bike for all the reason listed in the last posting.
