Hip Bursitis

I have been diagnosed with Hip Bursitis. I am not sure what the difference is between that and ITBS, except that my Ortho doctor says I shouldn't run. I have been doing pilates and yoga, I get a sports massage about every two weeks, and I was getting Chiro help, with some kind of sonar treatment(that helped while I had it) but I have really not run for about 5 or 6 weeks now. I tried to run a couple miles once or twice but it didn't work out. I am now thinking of may accupunture. Has anyone tried this?? If something doesn't change soon, I'll go back to my Ortho guy and see what he has to say. It has been so hard not to run with my friends, I am 41, I have run for many years and this year was my year of half marathons, I was finally going to move up and do a full one, til this happened. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've also been diagnosed with Hip Busitis after one (1!!) game of tennis and have been told no running for 7-10 days. It's very painful, even when I'm just walking, my dr. put me on 600 mls of motrin 3 times a day. My question is this - has anyone else had this before and how long did it take to heal completely?

Java10990 - Did you try acupuncture? Did it help?

I had hip bursitis (along with tendonitis) earlier this year. I wasn't smart enough to quit running when I should have. I tried the cortisone shot but it didn't help. I ended up doing physical therapy 3 times a week for about 2 months. For a total of 3 months I didn't run. I started running again in July. I still do the strengthening exercises/weights and stretches they taught me in PT as well as using a foam roller, and I'm doing fine. I still have a flare up now and then, but some naprosyn usually takes care of it.

Here is a good website about it:

It does NOT sound like bursitis (but I'm not a doctor). When I went to the doc, he pressed on the side of my hip and I about went through the roof, it was very painful. It even hurt to lay on that side at night. Mine also hurt when I wasn't running. Maybe its tendonitis. I suggest going to a doctor that will spend more than five minutes with you and really find out what the problem is.

I have recently been having trouble with this as well so I've been trying to swim more and run less. Does anyone know doing the elyptical machine will affect it or would it be a pretty safe cross training?

When I wasn't running, my PT said it was okay to swim, bike or do the elliptical, but not to go for more than 20 minutes on any individual activity and if it starts to hurt, back off on the speed. So I would get on the stationary bike for 20 minutes and then the elliptical right after that for 20 minutes.
