Hey all: so good to read so much encouragement! so many stories of active lives! RetiredGirl:  you go, girl! I also sometimes feel like a cartoon runner!

it's getting very warm in houston, thankfully it's been windy so that helps.  yesterday i ran in the hottest temp I ever have:  in the 90's. i soaked a wash cloth in cool water and wrapped that around the back of my neck. i found 2 water fountains along my run and stopped and resoaked the cloth and splashed some water on my head.  i run/walk: and my run time was really good:  11:45 to 12:20 pace.  that's an improvement for me.  i'm traveling now, so i should be able to run some hills these new few days. and it's cooler where i am now.

you all have fun! good luck on weekend races. and training!

    Hi,

I am new to this group but am hoping it will motivate me to get back to running.

I am a 12 minutes per mile runner but do enjoy it.  I did Death Valley Marathon in December and haven't done much since.

So hoping being part of this group will get me back into it.  Nice to talk to others that are of like minds.

    Thanks

While I count steps, I am an Engineer/Program Manager and retired Navy Flight Tech (P-3's).  I started counting steps while trying to both maintain a steady pace and working to increase my pace.  I really dislike wearing headphones and I find it almost meditative to keep the step count.  I will admit there are times when I loose track and just keep the rhythm of the count.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I've been out of touch for two days, because I live in Decatur, and all of north Alabama lost power when the tornados took out the BIG Transmission towers near the Browns Ferry Nuclear plant nearby.  We had sirens all day long as 4-5 tracks of severe storms passed thru.  Many towns around us had damage, injuries and death, but luckily it passed us by, and there was little damage in our town, just no power.

I'm able to communicate now, because I'm in Nashville for the Country Music half marathon, and we are enjoying power, internet and hot showers.  I went to the race expo today, and met Mr. John "Penguin" Bingham, as well as two Biggest Loser contestants.  John was funny and inspirational.

Tomorrow is forecast 55 at race start and humidity should be fine.  Trying to beat 3 hours - but the course is full of "rolling hills" so we shall see.

Good luck to anyone else racing today.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Jo Ann, I'm glad you are ok.  It's sounds pretty scary down there.

I am signed up for my first 10k tomorrow, and I was already bummed because rain and 'thundershowers' (whatever that means) are forecast.  But this morning I stepped on a nail in my bare feet!  We have hardwood floors and there's one nail that works itself up.  So, fortunately it was the top of the nail, but ouch!  I've been wearing a blister bandage and resting as much as possible with my foot up today.

So, do you think it would be crazy to run?  Crazy not to run?  Anything else I can do to make things better?  I feel like crying, I'm so disappointed.  This is my favorite run of the season because it's huge and there's music and swag afterwards.  Not to mention, I talked a book club friend into signing up yesterday.  So I would feel awful if I didn't run.

    What would you do?

    Thanks!

    Jo Ann,

I am so glad you are ok.  I have family in Blountsville, Arab and Huntsville.  It's been nerve wracking.  The amount of damage y'all sustained is just phenomenal.  All of you are in our prayers.

Do well this weekend, enjoy the hot showers and sleep with the lights on, just because you can!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Im apparently in the minority here - but I feel no bit of failure in walking!

I proud do my intervals (complete with my Jeff Galloway run/walk timer) for every race including 2 half marathons.

I start out with 2:2 for the first mile or until I feel stronger ... then I settle into 6:2 or 4:2 and no extra walk breaks are allowed for me.

The longest I have ever run without stopping was 1.3 miles... and if I was still focusing on running without stopping I would have given up a looong time ago. I am stiff and sore for about the first 2 miles... and my best miles are always mile 3 and after!

Emmaleigh:  I feel no shame with walking intervals, either.   If it is good enough for Galloway, I'm okay.   LOL.   Usually walking a minute of 90 seconds lets me run FASTER for longer periods.  I don't mind - and as you say, if I had to only run, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to stick.  But I run more and more and that is what counts!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Walking intervals are a great tool, sometimes I use them sometimes I don't. Everyone has to find the best way for them.

I completed a nice and easy 2 mile run this morning and I'm going to up my mileage next time to 2.25. Next Saturday I've leaned that my wife's school is hosting a Family Fun Run. it will be a  5k and is open to students, teachers and family. I haven't done a 5k since 1992 so I think this is a great time to experience another one!. The most I've run since getting back is 2.5 miles and that was torture, so I figure I'll simply have a goal to finish. If I feel okay to run through the whole thing I will, but if I'm feeling that it would be a struggle to do that I'll plan on taking 1 or 2 walk breaks - maybe a minute at the 1.5 mile and 2.25 mile mark. It should be fun!

Also, my scale this morning told me I weighed 257.7 pounds - more than a 4-pound drop this week. That was so good to hear after losing zero the week before.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Jo Ann! So glad you are okay. Cannot believe the devastation. Hope you have a great race.

To the person who stepped on the nail (sorry, forgot to write down names before I logged on and have a horrible memory) - Have you had a tetnus shot lately? I'm serious. Tetnus can happen. I'm no doctor so I can't say whether you should run or not. I know I'd probably try to run and walk if I needed to. I too believe there's no shame in walking. I've been passed tons of times by people running full out after their walk break and beaten by them by many minutes as well.

Yesterday I ran 7 miles - my longest distance so far. Just can't quite wrap my head around the fact that I ran that far when just a year ago I started by jogging for 30 seconds and thinking I was going to die! My quarter marathon is coming up a week from today. Rain is expected, but I'm going to love it regardless.

Hope everybody who's racing this weekend has a wonderful time.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Emmaleigh- I like your intervals, I've been doing 5:1 from beginning to end and I like the idea of 2:2 then progressing. I still wonder why I can't run the distance anymore I used to ...did a half marathon almost a year ago and have struggled since to get my distance back to no avail. I am going to train for the half in Guayaquil in October ( I need goals to get it done!!) and will try your system, thanks! I'm going out for a run at sunset tonight to see if the evening breezes will make it any easier...may go from a morning runner to evening whatever works at this point!!!
