Off and Running (soon)

Hi everyone!  First time poster and wannabe runner.  I'll be starting the c25k program just as soon as I get running shoes and clothes that I can run in (i.e. sports bra..lol) and feel comfortable in.  Have been poking around the forum and am already getting a ton of helpful advice!

I'm 36 and completely out of shape (and overweight to boot) so I'll definitely be taking things slowly...

Welcome Elena and congrats on deciding to better yourself.  Don't wait or put off this decision.  Go ahead and get out the door and start walking.  You can do that in comfortable shoes and any old clothes.  Take it slow and enjoy the fresh air and the sounds of spring.  Then you will be a few steps up on the game when you get your shoes & good wicking socks.

Post often and let us know of your progress.

You can do it Elena, and we are all right here by your side the whole time.  This is a great place for support and inspiration.  Good luck with the C25K and look forward to hearing about your progress.

If I can do this, so can you Elena!!  Haven't run in my entire life (except to the dinner table!) and I am finding it attainable and, even stranger...fun (sort of). I am challenged at times but I think the fact that there are rest days and that the running is initially done in  intervals gives the body a chance to adapt. I am looking forward to hearing about your progress.  Someone posted on my thread to "trust in the process"  ( I think it was drbojangles), great advice, I think of that often when doubts creep in.  I also figure that if my body is capable enought to have produced 2 babies, it is certainly capable of doing some running!

    Re: Off and Running (soon)

Congrats on deciding to do something great for yourself.  As others have said you can start walking in whatever comfortable shoes and clothes you have now.  If there is a running specialty store nearby they can help you with the shoes, the most important accessory you will need, along with the sports bra but I don't know anything about that.  I was overweight myself and walking at first helped me with the weight loss.  I had not heard of C25K but it turns out that I did something very similar to what it teaches.  Do take it slow, listen to your body, and if you have to repeat a day or week of the program, so be it.  You are not being graded whether you finish the program in the prescribed time, so have fun with it and enjoy being outdoors and active.  Before you know it you will have entered in a 5K and actually completing it.  I can't wait to join the others here who will tell you congratulations and ask when you will do your next race.  But no pressure, take the time you need to make this change, and good luck with it.

Welcome and good luck!  I just started running last August and fell in love with it so much, I started a blog for new runners like me.  You can do it, trust me.  And when you run your first 5k, you'll be hooked.  They are so much fun.  Enjoy your new hobby!

Congrats on your choice!! I agree that walking is a good place to start. I started my life change last June and have'nt looked back since. 63lbs lighter and running my first 10k (10-1/2 min miles) this coming Sat. YOU can do it too!!!! Tons of training programs for walking and running. Keep up the good work and enjoy life as you change in many ways. Phil 4:13 helped me with some hard work and eating the right way. Good luck to you, D.

I ran my first 10k 3 weeks ago, and it was the most fun I have ever had.  I am addicted to racing already...ran another 5k last weekend, and am running another 10k next weekend. You will love it!  Good luck!
