Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

You would LOVE LOVE LOVE west Texas, we have LOTS of sun.. LOL, no rain, but lots of sun..

Boot camp is 4 days x 1 hour per day of body boot camp. It is exercises such as push ups, squats, circuits of jumping jacks, etc on padded gymnastics equipment that you would not think much of unless you were doing them for, say 5 minutes straight. Then a series of sprints, etc. Simple, yet when you combine them for 60 minutes or so, your body starts wondering what the heck is going on. About day three of the first week, you go to get out of bed, and find you cannot without a pry bar. Yet, at middle age (45 here), you throw your leg over the side of the bed, cursing at anything that dares to even look at you, all the while swearing it is the mattress that has made your body go into early rigor mortis. Yet, you figure a way to hobble to the shower, get your workout clothes on and do it again..

that's really interesting...I've encountered the same problem and I, too, am low in Vitamin D and B12. hmmm....thanks for the input. I am horrible about taking daily vitamins., guess I should reconsider.

Great time to run seems to be 4 in the morning...I just did my first day running before work today and it certainly made the day seem to go much better than usual.  Finished my 1.5 miles in about 20 minutes and felt great all day.  Looking forward to tomorrow morning when I can run again!!

Text is this boot camp on a DVD or organized class?   I have not heard of anything like this but sounds like a great challenge.  I have looked at some DVD's called "insanity" workout, but I am cheap and did not want to sign on for the 3 payments of $49.95, yet......

Val- I use to take a fantastic vitamin that my Gyno suggested -- I was struggling with PMS and was in peri-menopause and had no energy in addition to being irritable......bad combination.....

anyway - OptiVite -loaded with B12 and again the cheap card popped up as it was about $25 a bottle from the drug store, but I think it lasted 3  months.   I am going to break down on this too as the benefits were great.   She also gave me a B12 shot once a month - that helped  me with energy tremendously.......I see from some of my google search, the price is a wee bit cheaper than the local drug store..... so I will be re-arming myself....

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hi everybody!

I'm new here; been reading through the thread. I'm 48 and training for my first marathon (NYC in Nov.). And I'm a slowpoke! I'm in the middle of base-building right now, working up to 20 miles a week so I can start the "real" training in July.

Right now I run at the lightning pace of 14:00/mi and I'm  trying not to get discouraged. Since I'm increasing mileage almost every week, my pace fluxuates a lot. My long run is now at 6 miles, and it'll stay at 6 until the second week in July, when I start adding miles.

Can I ask a favor? I'm training alone, no running partners. And whenever I struggle during a run or have to take walk breaks, I start to think, "This is easy for everybody but me. Why aren't I getting faster?!?" Then I beat myself up. I know that's no good.

I need to be reminded by people who really know (not my ex-husband, who runs an 8:00 pace) that this is hard for me because I'm doing something difficult--and not 'cause there's something wrong with me!

You all inspire me so much!

    Lori

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Good for You Lori - training for a marathon.

I know exactly where you are coming from with expectations, anticipating better results from the consistent training.......and still at a certain pace.  You are however, faster than me, so I hope that encourages, there is always someone faster, or slower.

It is your race, your enjoyment of the movement forward.  That was said to me on this site early on as I was not making progress - still not making progress, but still moving forward.  I cannot run 6 miles and using the 'run' to describe my foward motion is reallllly a stretch of the verb.  It is plodding at best.  I have walkers beat me at the finish line, but I cross and that is a victory for me.   Keep going forward, keep the focus of your personal race in NYC with maybe some holiday shopping at the end of the trip - what a fantastic time to be in NYC.

Anyway you go, say you can, you can, you can, you will.......share your progress as it encourages the slower among us,  to aspire to keep ploggling  forward as fast as possible...

Haha. That's funny. I've never heard the term penguin used like that. But I'm am definitely a "penguin," no doubts about it. I'm 19 and my 51 year old dad runs faster than I do. It would be embarrassing except for the fact that he's actually in really good shape (for a man of his advanced years). lol

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

so every race is definately a learning experience, that's for sure!

First off, if anyone else on here has finished dead last, have you ever apologized to volunteers when you crossed the finish line? lol

today i definitely ran my own race, but i finished! i did a 10k this morning. the weather started nice, so i just wore shorts, a long sleeve tshirt over a short sleeved one, and called it good. five min before the race everyone is huddled inside b/c of our brilliant nebraska wind blowing a cold front through the area. sustained (north) winds at this point...15-20mph...gusts...30-35 ish when i got there, they didn't have me registered, then they spent at least 5 minutes trying to find a shirt and goodie bag for me.

this is also the first time i've ever run on any of our hike/bike trails, very nice. second piece of advice. make sure you look at map course before race...but thank God for spraypainted arrows on pavement.

volunteers were very patient, even a little shocked that i didn't take water, and that i was actually doing the 10k. one (older) 5k walker on her way back yelled at me "you're still jogging? way to go"...jogging...lol...that's me RUNNING! i also got a high five from a really hot guy while he was on his mile 4 and i was on my mile 2...that made my day. this also made my day too...on the way back i was being led by a meadowlark...he would fly a few feet ahead of me, land on a fence, then when i got within 2 footsteps, he would fly ahead another 50 feet, land again, etc...i think he did this for about a half mile or so. i just imagined he was all my friends (and fellow penguins) encouraging me on.

did i mention running into the 35mph wind gusts? i couldn't figure out if i was running or walking...but at the end of the morning, i ran it all, and finished dead last, but 2 volunteers were there to greet me @ the finish line, and walk with me back to the registration sight. Needless to say, everyone was so cold that they left, and vols had torn things down, but gave a couple extra doorprizes to me. my hands were so cold, i could barely make them work for a good half hour.

my time was approx 1:47 ish, which was the time i did at the track for 6.3miles last thursday, but i'm blaming that on the wind, and having to wait for a red light. my next race, a half marathon, is in june...so now i have to start increasing my distance by 2 miles for a month.

so aside from them not seeing me as registered, my being extremely slow, and apologizing @ the finish line for being so slow, this turtle paced penguin survived and finished the event.

congrats to all who ran/are running this weekend! hm, here i come!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hey everyone. Just thought I would chime in with something that has been happening in my runs. About two months ago I picked up a HRM to pair with my garmin. I did the research and found my max heart rate and resting heart rate and plugged them into the computer. When I first started running with the HRM I could not seem to keep my HR in the 75 to 80 percent range for endurance. It always seemed to creep up into the 90 to 95% range and I would have to slow way down, even walk to get it back to the range I wanted. I was frustrated and almost gave up on it. But I decided two weeks ago to slow down my starting pace and see how that worked. Well I have to say that it worked awesome. I was able to keep my HR in the 75 to 80% zone and when I completed my 4.5 miles I felt great. I have kept this up on all my longish runs since and last night I ran the same 4.5 mile course and my time improved by 3 minutes with no difference in how I felt during and after the run. So I am a believer now! I don't even pay attention to my pace when I run now and just concentrate on keeping my HR in range. I am still slow, about a 11:30 pace, but it's getting better.

Just wanted to share and I hope I didn't bore anyone to much.
