I always feel better when I'm running for a cause. I think it's easier when you know that something bigger than yourself depends on you. It's just to easy for me to slack off when I do it on my own.

For all the ex-smokers out there- I quit my 2 pack a day habit 9 years ago and still crave but I dont cave. Keep strong my friends.

Tink- I'll see you in Anahiem at the end of January. Ill be earning my Coast-to-Coast medal and running with my family members (I'm originally from that area and now live in Tampa). It will be nice to know that, even though it's a stranger, someone else is cheering me on to finish.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Melissa- Congratulations!! So excited that you had a wedding - and you never really mentioned it a lot lately.  I bet running helped you to calm your nerves and work on wedding plans in your head.

I finally prepared my race report for the IronGirl.  You can find it on this other thread: http://community.active.com/message/996271

I did better than last year (YEA!), but not as well as I'd like.  On the bike leg, it was windy & I've had minimum outdoor hill training this year, so I was actually 1.3 min slower.  But when I compared to our AG winner (who also won AG last year), she was 4.5 mins slower on the bike also. So w/o the wind, I may have done better.  The big improvement was the run leg, because last year I was dead & walked a lot of the run.  I improved 8.5 minutes in the run, with no leg cramps and only short walks up hills.  Overall, I finished 8 min faster than last year, and moved from 2/3rd to 1/3 in my AG ranking (13th!!).

Thanks to everyone for your best wishes.  It really helped to know you were rooting for me.

It has been a slow week recovery week for running, but I can't really stop because I've a 5K Saturday, a 10K next week that is uphill the first 3 miles, and a 15K mid June w many hills. One problem with having many racing events is maintaining a regular training schedule.  If it is an important event, between the tapering and the recovery, keeping mileage and cross-training consistent goes out the window.  So, I've got to pick my "ON" races to taper for, and just use the other events as part of my overall training regime.  Having said that, I really need to build up my weekly running mileage because that's the only thing that seems to help my weight.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hello Penquins....the weather finally cleared a bit and I was able to get outside. I would love to say I attempted a run, but it just didin't happen. Recently my my legs (calf in particular) have been extremely tight/heavy. I was able to walk 2.2 miles at a fairly decent pace (15:54mm) but am trying to figure out how to relieve the tight calf issue. It did seem the tightness eased up a bit  3/4 of the way thru the walk.

I have been eating bananas, taking Vitamin D/B12 multivitamin, trying to make sure I hydrate myself.  Any other suggestions?

it is nice to see all the replies to and from everyone. to be able to run for a cause helps us keep going out to train in all kinds of weather.my wife andI have walked or ran in races for lung and brain cancer, and other good causes. I also do the ride for kids (brain tumors) and strolls for epilepsy. When I quit smoking all the pills patches did not work so I went tried accupuncture that worked no cravings or withdrawl.any day we wake up is a good day.

    stay well stay safe

I undestand completely. I was a dedicated user of standard running flats, then after reading an article on them, went for the Vibram Five fingers (the foot mittens is what my kid calls them). I love them. I have stopped running with a brace and my will gives out long before my legs do. Theyre not for everyone though.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I love reading all the posts and love that  it is called "calling all penguins".. when I read through the posts, some of you are not really penguins..If I could run a 5k in 36 or so minutes..that would be fast..

I did the c25K program and finished in March and have been jogging almost every other day.I am up to going about 3.5 miles at a time with a pace of about 46 or 47 minutes for running 5k.

I just got an iphone and am so motivated with some of the apps. For example, the nike+gps is amazing. It keeps track of your pace, distance and time; gives voice promts and plays your playlist.

Another app called Daily Burn keeps track of all of your food for the day. You can even get a bar code scanner that goes with the application and instead of entering the name of the food, you can scan the bar code with your iphone and it records the food and the calories.   I am trying to lose weight and I find this record keeping helps..however, I have been trying to lose 10 pounds for several months and the weight just doesn't come off. I am down about 4 pounds..but with all the exercise and recording, it seems I shuld be losing more weight.
