So I know many runners every year hope to get selected in the lottery to the NYC Marathon- but clearly many people will be let down.
In addition, Chicago and Marine Corps are full- so what other great marathons are you looking to run this fall instead??
Looking for some great crowd supported marathons in the fall...what are you suggestions???
"What will you WEAR on your next RACE DAY???"
There are lots of great fall marathons. But if you insist on "great crowd supported marathons", you really narrow your choices, to races like Chicago, NYC and MCM. If crowd support isn't a priority, run Wineglass, Niagara Falls, Hartford or Philly, just to name a few. Las Vegas is a possibility, I don't know what kind of spectator support they get.
When I started training for my first marathon in 2003, I was living in DC and had my heart set on the MCM. Back then they held a lottery and limited the field to 18,000 runners. When I didn't make it I was pretty disapointed because most of my friends and training partners were in already. Someone suggested the Balimore marathon, which was held two weeks before MCM. It was only in its second year at that point and consisted of just a marathon consisting of 3,000 runners and a half. It was a great route and a great experience. You run though some great neighborhoods and there was very good fan support. What's more you start and finish in Camden Yards. In the years since I ran it for the first time the event has improved exponentially. I ran it again in 2009 and could not believe how the event had improved and grown.
There are plenty of hotels within walking distances of the start line and you will be located in the Inner Harbor and flights are pretty cheap into BWI.
Good luck in your training!
I have friends that have this similar issue. They are planning on running the Denver Marathon or the Baltimore. I did the Baltimore half last year which runs in conjunction with the full and it was a great race with adequate fan support.
What Will You Wear On Race Day?
Vegas this dec will be a night run so that might be of interest? As far as crowd support its great along the strip BUT the full goes off the strip into "dead" areas and there is little to NO crowd support ---and in fact the band turnout for it being an RNR event is sad and this esp sticks out when I compare it to the Pittsburgh marathon and 1/2 from last weekend....65 musical groups total and the course full and 1/2 was packed with people cheering you on people even came out of there houses in a few neighborhoods to pass drinks and treats to the runners>>>did you look on MCM FB page to see if anyone is selling their bib?

MCM usually has a lot of transfers (they're allowed). Come late July and August look at http://community.active.com/community/sports/running/events/classifieds
Apparently CraigsList does a good business too.
It appears there are still charity teams available if you are willing to fund raise. I was asked by our local chapter of the American Heart Assn. to join their team today, and in researching it, there seem to be several opportunities.
