Re: weight lifting
hi-
you definitely can. you don't necessarily need to, but if you have the time, certain exercises can be very helpful.
some suggestions: lunges, step ups, cable rows, shoulder rotation, standing hip extension, flexion, adduc and abduc., crunches, leg raises.

aim for muscular endurance, which means high reps (15-20) and low weight. (you don't want muscle soreness from lifting!) probably 2x a week is enough.

don't forget to stretch too!

Re: weight lifting
rogrego,

I would recommend developing a strong core region. All three legs of the triathlon require some degree of core strength, especially the swim and run. Stay away from the unilateral and single joint motion because our body rarely functions in this manner. It would also help to complete the exercises on an unstable platform(bosu, stability disk, stability ball).
If you are in the racing phase of your training, I would add a cycling specific workout.

I would be glad to email you some animated core exercises if you want to add some more to your routine. Just let me know.
