There are two things that I take away from this segment of my interview with Coach K. The first...I love when he says, "You never really own the game if you depend on a Coach to play." "The best thing about basketball is that you can get better at the game working by yourself!" -Jay Wright, Mens Coach: VillanovaA mentor once told me to ask three questions when talking with players to see if they "Own the Game."1.) Why do you play?(You wouldn't believe some of the answers we get...Because my friends do, Because I want to get a scholarship, Because I'm TALL!)**On a Side-Note...The serious players I'm around play for one reason - THEY LOVE IT!**The second and third questions are as follows...2.) How Good Do you want to be?and...3.) What are you willing to do to get there? These 3 questions help to see what the player wants from the game. The second quote from Coach K I liked was more advice than anything and directed at players who want to improve during the summer months. He said, "Make sure you aren't just playing games."For the majority of players, if they play 3 games in a day, the last thing they want to do is go out and work on Fundamentals.Games are where you use your strengths, Practice is where you develop your weaknesses. That being said, if you want to "Own The Game" spend time by yourself developing your passion for the game.
